it's been a "figure it out as we go" kind of thing since i moved in.
(ie. hanging more stuff & just moving things around as time passed)

and i was planning on painting my room after i realized how generically juvenile it looked with outdated posters and teenage pile-on accessories.

i don't wanna have to hang everything back up and put all my stuff back on the shelves with the same old cluttery look.

what can i do, besides paint, to feel like i've really made a positive change to the walls and the atmosphere?

Not being sure of your age or personal style preference, I'll keep suggestion to just a few basic hints. First, unclutter. Take everything off the walls, shelves, etc. leaving only the basic furniture pieces. Store it in the garage or somewhere else in the house while putting the room back together. Sometimes we accumulate so much "stuff" that trying to do anything with it can be overwhelming. Next decide what your needs are as far as furnishing the room...bed, dressing area, study or reading nook, then arrange the furniture to give you the most ample space possible. Now may be a good time to revamp bedding and window coverings. If budget is a problem, choose a color that works well with existing wall color and hang simple sheer full length panels on the window. If you have the benefit of a small table next to the bed, cover it to match adding a nice lamp and possibly a plant, flower arrangement, container of potpourri, scented candle or some other decorative item (remember, no clutter).

Now comes the hard part...restraint. Instead of cluttering your shelves, why not use some attractive baskets to hold odd assortments like writing materials, nailcare and polish accessories, hair trims and accessories. Everything else that is essential, try to find space in drawers. If you like reading, put some books up there and lay a couple on the side to hold the rest in place, then sit a decorative item on top. If not, why not invest in a decorative urn or container with a trailing plant. Sounds like you're past the poster stage, so go to flea markets and thrift shops and find one or two good sized framed art pieces that go well with the color and decor and that you really like, a wall mounted candle sconce, etc. Most times a few well placed pieces make more of an impact than alot of smaller ones.

Make the most of your desire for a positive change. Anything you can do without or has no sentimental value, donate to a charity. It will help someone else, and I dare say that will help your spirit as well. Other things you still want to hang onto but not necessarily put on display, pack in shallow containers under the bed. Later, you can make quick decorating when the mood strikes you. Good luck with the room!

The success of any decorating scheme depends on how well it suits all the members of your family. To create a décor that you will be happy with, think about what you want and also what you don’t want.

It’s a good idea to know what you have before you begun to change things. As you begin to pull your design ideas together, think about your preference and what will work in your home.

Color can work wonders... it can change the look of a room and change your feeling about the room. You can start by looking through magazines, and catalogs. Give yourself plenty of time, it will take longer than you think, and your ideas will develop as you go.

Gathering samples is a great way to begin. If you are starting with a color, your samples might include fabric, paint chips, wallpaper, carpet, wood, stone, and tile.

Knowing what you can spend on a project will give you a clearer idea of what you can achieve. If you’ll on a limited budget, mark off those things that will make the most difference, such as a new wall color and a new sofa.

You can set the mood of a room in lots of ways, such as lights, and furnishings. There are no hard or fast rules or must-do sequence for this process.

One neat/inexpensive idea is to get several prestreched artists canvases from an art supply store and paint each one a different color (or the same color). It's easier than painting the wall, and can make a huge difference.

Try shadow boxes, different shape wall units, fabric panels and accessories. If things have been too cluttery, try putting away everything you don't need and maybe add a new piece. Keep it more modern and minimalistic.

All these things can be changed out when the mood strikes.

if you like the fabric look you can create a canopy over your bed or hang from curtain rods to cover the walls. you can use curtain rods, poles or the like to hang pictures off of to create a gallery look. create a collage of pictures or photos with a fabric coloured bulletin board that has ribbon in checker or diamond patterns which will create some depth or texture.

taking recycled paper and frame it that will add depth. getting or making a large canvas and making your own artwork. changing the colour of the light bulbs in your room can give you a fake, different colour in the room. changing the colour/texture of light shades, hanging mirrors up to create the look of a larger room.

get book shelves with doors to hide the clutter and you can paint that to ad some fun into the room.
