I have been to several stone circles and avebury was the best. I felt humbled to be in its presence, it felt like a very important place with lots of energy buzzing round, much more so than Stonehenge.
I also felt apart of all the other pagans who had been and will be there it was a very whole feeling I felt like I belonged. and being able to touch and sit with the stones was amazing. There's an area where three trees meet and their roots are so jumbled in each others you can't tell which tree is which. its a very magical place. and yes the pubs good too! yes there is an essence of sadness but in my opinion it is because there is not much respect for the stones anymore, maybe they dont like a villiage being built in the middle? and ignorant unknowing people thinking the worst of the place? you only get back what you give...
I have also been in many many churches including Cathedrals. I never feel welcome and always feel like I'm put upon and restrained sort of closed in, not in Avebury it was very very different and much nicer I feel much more energy and presence
than in a closed in church.

I've been to Avebury in England. I am a Christian, but that doesn't mean things can't spook you. I felt a bit on edge, if anything. I later found out from my homestay family that the history in that area is deep in witchcraft, and still is, unfortunately.
So no, I did not feel enlightened, at least not in a "nice" way!

At Avebury and Stonehenge I felt sad, brooding presences. I felt them looking at us as if we were mayflies buzzing around them. That was years ago when I was a pagan, and I wonder how I would feel there now, as a Christian.

Titus 3:3 - For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another
