Well the Second World War lasted six years. The war in Afghanistan has been going now for almost five years. In answer to your question I wouldn't be surprised if it did last as long as WWII. The US has no plan to leave any time soon.

Everybody and their dog is howling for some sort of plan to withdraw from Iraq, but our idiot President has his Texan manly image to maintain and so he spends a lot of time jutting his jaw out and posturing in front of the cameras, telling the world that the USA won't back out of Iraq and has no obligation to provide a timeline. With this moron in office, the war in Iraq could easily go longer than WW2, which America was involved in for about 6 years. Personally though, I see the war in Iraq as more comparable to Vietnam than World War 2. And we all know how long Vietnam took...

Of course we have a plan. We have been describing our plan from the beginning. We have been pointing out that these sort of conflicts do not end in a few years. We have been trying to tell you that progress in Iraq is made up of things that the news media will not feel is 'newsworthy.'

If all you know about the situation in Iraq comes from the 'explosion of the day' coverage from the news media - there is no way you can have a real understanding of how things are going.

Hint: The news media is only giving you the stories that they think will increase ratings - not what you need to know in order to understand what is going on.

IT"S WAR!! it's unpredictable. The problem with actually getting out is that..
1. If we set an actual date, it is almost certain that our enemies will get wind of it and hurt us at the point when we aren't ready for it.
2. We went in there for a reason. We aren't leaving until those missions are fulfilled. Period.
3. We are keeping them busy over there so they can't really organize an attack against America. What happens when we leave without the majority of the terrorists being eliminated. They'll just attack us again.

People seriously need to realize that is is war, it could take anywhere from 1 to 100 years. People are going to die and people are going to get hurt but that is how WAR goes.

"The War" is over ... didn't last very long at all ..... this is the aftermath. People seem to forget that we were in both Germany and Japan for a long long time after WW2 was "over", in many cases fighting the exact same types of insurgencies we see today in Iraq.

WW2 lasted for 8 years between 1937 and 1945. We only entered half-way through.
