Yes, it is a sign of the difficulties of science education in the US. To get back on track, I think we have to make parents more responsible for how their kids do in school. If a child shows up for kindergarten and doesn't know their alphabet, we should consider the parents to have been neglectful. Another thing we could do (but won't), is to take the power over schools away from the local communities and have a national curriculum. Still another is to lengthen the time for teachers to get tenure back to about 10 years (although 7-8 might be enough).

What makes me mad is that evolution is taught in schools like math; it doesn't even fit the scientific definition of a theory!
An educated guess based off of previously existing knowledge to explain a phenomenon is a hypothesis.
A hypothesis that has numerous scientific experiments to back it up with solid, NON-CIRCUMSTANTIAL evidence is a theory.
We have no such experiments to back up evolution; all experiments that tested the plausibility of creating life from dead materials were failures, or scientifically unsound. All the 'evidence' about our DNA closely resembling chimpanzees and soforth is just circumstantial; even if it can be agreed to be a remarkable coincedence (which is usually a very divided opinion), it isn't a solid link. Speaking of links.... I know evolutionists must be sick of having this little cliche thrown a them, but it's the most solid argument possible against evolution: where are the missing links? There should be as many if not more missing link fossils as there are normal ones.

We can keep REAL science in the science classroom (not Intelligent Design which is NOT science at all) and teach evolution properly.
ID proponents think they are hot stuff when they trot out their misconceptions about the evolutionary theory (theory meaning in this case a tested and well supported principle, not a guess [hypothisis]) and claim a victory because laypeople (of science not religion) cannot rebutt them because they themselves don't have a strong grasp of how evolution really works either.
And the bible said "let them be ignorant for ignorance is bliss" ... arent misconceptions fun?!

First off, humans and monkeys separated at the early mammal stage and one cannot say that monkeys evolved into man. Second evolution is a science, and has much scientific evidence to support it.

The US educational system has been woefully inadequate for quite some time now... ask any geography question and see the response you get.
Things as what was written above will become harder to correct as more time passes. As these children go to college and perhaps become teachers themselves the ideas will manifest themselves into future generations.
Perhaps what is needed is for those who have learned their theories correctly to go back to school (it would be nice with govt subsidization but we know that won't happen) and get our teaching degrees and teach the theories correctly.

You want to know what baffled my mind... I was watching "The Life of Mammals" it is a BBC nature documentary and they were talking about how a certain primate made it to the island of Madagascar.
Then, it had no predators and no competition... so the species then evolved and specialized into dozens of complex species on the island looking radically different than their predecessor and having even different bone structures.
Here's what I don't understand - wouldn't a lack of competition and predators lead to evolutionary stagnation with nothing to weed out the weaker animals? And yet instead it led to radical new life forms?
That doesn't add up to me.

Oh, the ignorance of some people. They must really accept the truth that God Designed man and monkeys and orangutans and chimpanzees from the similar blueprints. Please He only had 7 days, give the big guy a break.
Can we just hurry up and get ID into the schools and end this debate already?

Just because you so desperately want to be descended from an ape doesn't mean you are. I'd like to be descended from a billionaire but alas I'm not. Believe what you want to believe and don't worry about what the rest of us are believing. The educational system is still very liberal and anti-Christian. That is why there are so many Christian schools and homeschooling.

Make education a privilege instead of a place to keep them off the streets. Not all kids will benefit from 12 years of schooling -- we need technical schools or apprenticeships for those who have reached their limit. That will free up time for teachers to work with the kids that understand the necessity for education.

You can't.
Honestly you cannot stop stupid people from breeding. Because when stupid people breed, they pass along thier defective genetic materiel to thier offspring.
It's reverse evolution. De-evolution one might say.
All you can do is make sure ID stays out of the classroom. What they hear on the street and choose to belive is not our problem...
By the way Cdawg, thanks for illustrating my point. You truely are a sad commentary on the failure of the Education system. I have nothing but pity for you...
