If I were in your position I would take the child to the doctor to get a physical. Maybe he/she has a slower metabolism than the other children or the child may have a thyroid condition. If, medically, everything is fine then maybe the child might be an emotional eater. If that's the case then the hard part will be finding out why and what's going on or it could just be genetics. The good thing is that these potential problems can be fixed. The sooner the problem is identified, the sooner your child can get started on healthier life.

Don't call attention to it, cook low fat meals and provide healthy snacks. Take a walk with your child daily and plan other physical activities, steer your child away from the TV and video games.

Whatever you do, don't criticize. It only makes it worse.

If it's a girl, they sometimes put on extra weight as they start entering puberty. So, that's normal. However...last thing you need as a girl is to get too chubby as you hit puberty.

Do things as a family to get exercise. Keep only healthy food in the house. Eliminate the junk food, and serve decent meals. Skip the fast food...

All the usual advice...

I wouldnt mention anything in fear of hurting his/her feelings. I would just try to get them into sports or any activity that will get them to enjoy doing cardio exercises without them really focusing on it. Also this might be a good sign for you too. Maybe you and your child can walk or do sports together. you can never be too healthy these days

Have you child play a sport. My little brother is the same way. My parents made him join soccer. He loves it and its good excercise
Also do not let him/her eat whenever they want. Have them eat only one meal and not go back for seconds. Eat healthy. Remember you need to be the example. If you are not ready to start a healthy eating "program" chances are he wont either.

You just answered your own question. Try changing the kids diet and encourage the kids to be active that usually burns the fat.

don't criticize or point out the fact that they are gaining weight. make sure your whole family eats healthy foods-- cut our sweets and unhealthy snacks for everyone, and make exercise a family activity--- just playing in the yard or in the pool will do wonders for this one childs weight and will also benefit everyone else also. if the weight is drastic and you are very worried about health issues talk with your pediatrician

1. If there are video games and television involved in your kids' lives, turn them off.
2. Quit the processed foods. Eat more whole grains and vegetables.
3. Get outside and MOVE. PLAY. BREATHE.
4. Drink plenty of water.

This advice is for you whole family.
