About 24 hours. If you wash it too far in advance, the natural oils will build up on your hair again and the dye won't penetrate the hair as well. But on the other hand, if you wash it right before you dye it, the residue of the shampoo/conditioner might still be on your hair, and also your hair won't have any natural oils to protect it from the harsh chemicals that are in many dyes and it will make it very brittle and damaged.

Well dye your hair whenever you want to but don't wash it for about 24 to 48 hours if your using bleach. When you bleach it blonde use lot's of conditioner when you wash it out and use lot's of leave in conditioner and then when you wash your hair out it will be SOOOO smooth. If your using a color from the hair salon or a box color just wash your hair after 24 hours. With the salon or box color your hair won't be as dry so just use the conditioner it comes with...that's the best conditioner. Good Luck!!

i remember the first time i ever got highlights done on my hair, the stylist said that the optimum time between washing and dying was 3 days, because of the oils in your hair being more accepting to dyes at that point. i don't know how true that was -- the past 15 years I've done at-home products, and usually wait 24-48 hours and it seems to work fine, lol.

call a styling salon and ask the manager - generally they'll have the most experience. or, if there's a local community college/beauty school in your area, give them a quick call.

ps -- a lot of times, if there is a beauty school/tech school in your area, they offer their services at a greatly discounted rate, because it gives their students 'hands-on' practice - just something to consider...
