The first link below is either a mail order or free download. It is a Bootable LINUX system that does NOT have to be installed. It can be run from either a CD or DVD (whichever you've burned it to)

The second link is a list of well known CD Based Linux links..

as far as i heard and know, to burn a bootable disc for linux the best solution its to use a mac computer and use his best burning sofware called TOAST TITANIUM 6 (not 7). You'll see all the required settings there. (ask a good friend who has a mac to do it for you).
Now to download a copy of linux do a google search or....why not a yahoo search and im sure you'll find the answer in no time.

If you're a beginner, then you should start with one of these: SUSE, Fedora Core, Mandriva, Ubuntu (Kubuntu or Xubuntu..).
I personally prefer Ubuntu because it's made after Debian, the most powerful Linux distribution (from my point of view..).
You'll be downloading an image file (usually iso format). After finishing the download just burn the image to the cd/dvd!
All the links needed to download, find additional information about all linux distributions currently available, user forums and much more can be found here:

Guides are there... the downloads are images, so all you have to do is burn the images, and the disc should be bootable.
