the bible only shows the lineage of Jesus through Joseph to David. the bible never says that Mary is a descendant of David therefore Joseph must be the biological father of Jesus for the prophecy to be fulfilled.

The reference to the Jewish lineage of the messiah is supposed to refer to the FATHER'S side. There is nothing in the OT about the messiah being a divine being, the son of 'God'.

Jesus was not descended from King David. Per Genesis 49:10 and Isaiah 11:1, the Messiah must be descended on his father's side from King David. However, according to the Christian claim that Jesus was the product of a virgin birth, he had no father -- and thus could not have possibly fulfilled the messianic requirement of being descended on his father's side from King David. The Christian idea of a virgin birth is derived from a verse in Isaiah describing an "alma" as giving birth. The word "alma" has always meant a young woman, but Christian theologians came centuries later and translated it as "virgin." This accords Jesus' birth with the first century pagan idea of mortals being impregnated by gods.

Regardless of Christianity's belief to the contrary, Jesus was not descended from David - unless Joseph was his biological father.

You are incorrect. The bible gives both Joseph's and Mary's bloodlines. That is why the geneology is different in the book of Luke and the book of Matthew. They are identical up until David, and then Mary is descended through one son of David(Nathan) and Joseph is descended through Solomon(another son of David).

Joseph was Jesus's "legal" parent although biologically he was not related to Jesus.

This is an excellent question, and I've been trying to find a lineage of Mary for quite some time now, for a different reason.

The bloodline is not as important as the father claiming the son as firstborn. Joseph claimed Jesus as his firstborn son through adoption, therefore he is a decendent of David.

I am quite sure Mary is from the right bloodline. That is the only reason she was chosen. The jewish lineage only /usually only lists men and not the women , so who was Marys father is the real question!

That's not true Jesus is a blood descendent through Mary. She is traced back to David's son Nathan.

It was prophesied that the Mesiah would come from the house of David...Jesus was from the house of David. it was prophesied that a Virgin would be the mother of the Messah It is understood that Virgin means the child would be concieved in an unusual way to the house of David exactly as it was prophesied to be.

Joseph was recognized as his father; that's all that matters for you to be counted into somebody's lineage.
