I have a 6-year-old female Golden Retriever. She has always been a little hyper and neurotic, and has shown some signs of submission such as avoiding prolonged eye contact with people. My oldest daughter sometimes acts harshley towards the dog, establishing strong dominance, which may be causing her stress. My daughter has been living out of the house for 6 years now, and just recently the dog has begun to urinate on her bedroom carpet but nowhere else. The dog has done this periodically in the past, but then stopped. This time, however, the behavior is continuing. We are growing very impatient with the dog. We have tried stern punishment and closing her off from the room, but nothing has worked. It doesn't seem to be submissive or dominant urination. Does anyone know what is causing this behavior and how we can correct it?

Providing that your dog has no bladder infection, I would assume your dog is making a point of replacing your daughter in the pecking order. Try starting the crate training process again to get the dog to understand where it's place in the family is again. Give her a lot of praise when she asks to go outside to pee.

Yes, take her to the vet first. Could be UTI, kidney problems, even diabetes. Is she drinking more than usual? If you can rule out physical problems then you have a behavior problem. I'm a little confused about your daughters--is the oldest daughter living in the house or not? Stress can certainly cause behavior problems. Does the dog urinate in the house when you are home or when you are gone? You may have to go back to crate-training.
Good luck!

Stress could be causing this reaction, did something happen recently between her and your daughter? If it is stress, then punishment will only make the problem worse. Prevention is the best measure, keep her out of that room totally. Make it like housebreaking all over again, supervise her and don't give her a chance to mess in the wrong place, but reward her for going where she's supposed to.

It could be UTI so vet check is a good idea. With respect to the eye contact, I read that dogs don't like to make eye contact with people. Whenever I look at my mutt she turns her head away. If you don't catch the dog in the act of urinating it's too late for punishment. They have short term memory for the bad things. If you keep your daughter's bedroom door closed at all times she won't be able to get in there and urinate. Good Luck.

Well, what you need to do is first, make sure it is not a medical problem, take her to the vet. 2. When you see the dog go to the bathroom on the rug, say no immediately! If you don't catch them right when they do a ehaviour which is not what you want, yelling and punnishing a few seconds after would mean nothing to them. So always whatch the dog, ifyou notiice it spinning, or crowtching or getting ready to go, take it outside then preize when it goes potty outside.

Make sure you are cleaning the stained area well! If they smell their eurn on the carpet, it incourages them to go there.

Hope these tips and hints help you out.

If possible, try having your daughter come home for a while and whenever the dog wets have your daughter correct the dog and see what that does. Other than that be creative. Try anything and everything. If nothing seems to work, take her to the vet. Something could be wrong.

It could be that she has a Urinary Tract Infection, and she uses that room because she is embarrased to be seen urinating in the home, cause she knows better. Just take a urine sample to the vet to check. That would be a good start.
