It has never been acceptable to yell at a clerk behind a service counter. When did it become acceptable for the clerk behind the counter to treat the customer with little or no respect and with more attitude than any one person should possess?

It has never been acceptable to yell at anyone trying to do their job.
That's the trouble with customers, you are stuck with their attitudes, their language, their ability to communicate what they want, their filthy language, their misplaced anger, their arrogant and belittling to bolster their egos...

I have to deal with people after auto accidents and it can be very trying. But fortunately for me, most of my contact is over the phone so I can hold the phone away from my ear or I can let my manger listen in and interject that we will end the conversation if they continue verbally abusing us.
Unfortunately I have become thick-skinned and pessimistic (terrible I know) about the general public and expect the worst. But when you do get the appreciative and kind customer it is a treat and makes my day to want to go out of my way to help them.
I've also had people yell at me and swear and then later call me and apologize for their behavior. So I guess it's the nature of all of us that have to deal with the public. We don't choose them they choose us.
I like to always say have a nice day at the end even if they mutter something below their breath. Just don't take it personally and never bring it home to ruin your personal time. I find a good workout or run is a good release, not drinking.

It didn't. Some people just don't care about looking stupid. Then again, since many clerks are stupid maybe they should be yelled at. But all in all, it's pretty much a waste of time and energy unless the person yelling is just trying to catch a deal or a freebie. Yelling at someone will not make them "get it".

That is a really good question. Society hold that a clerk in a store because of low wages etc. is not entitled to respect. We need to learn to value peoples contribution to all facets of life to give everyone dignity.

When people started making more money and started thinking that the we owe them something, instead of us doing them a service.

Hell; I had a customer using profanity and calling me all sorts of dirty names ..Not because i was stupid and didn't answer his questions but because he couldn't afford the price. when i actually y stood up for myself and told him to get his *** out of my store i deserve more respect than that he shoved me hard enough to knock me to the floor. I then proceeded to cuss him out and i got fired for using profanity....funny thing, when i asked what is the correct store policy if someone assaults you? I was told "we don't have one"
