What are you trying to accomplish? Are you walking for fitness? When I first began, I would walk (as briskly as I could) for 30 mins...then I worked up to an hour...then I alternated by walking a block and jogging a block on my usual route, which by then usually took me less than an hour...

Do what works for you as far as time/distance...just remember, however far from your starting point you go out, you need to have enough energy to get back. And this time of year, if you're walking outdoors, carry a bottle of water in each hand...it adds resistance and gives you a way to keep hydrated out in the heat.

Good luck!

The "experts" say that 1/2 hour brisk walk is sufficient for weight loss. (daily) If you are walking for health (other than weight loss) you may want to get the pace up to where you can still talk comfortably without heavy panting. This would be on a fairly flat surface in both cases. Walk for as long as you care to, 1/2 hour or up to 1 1/2 hours is fine.

I have read that if you want to loose weight you need to watch what you eat and walk at least 30 minutes a day.

If you walk for 20 - 30 minutes a day, it is good for your heart, will give you more energy and help you loose weight.

30 minutes. Go at a pace that will have you sweating within 15 minutes, and try to keep that pace for the 30.
