I wouldn't spend that much on something that depreciates.
There is really no arguable reason for spending more than about 20-25k on a car. Anything above that is really just status seeking.
You really can't answer the questions as you haven't laid down the parameters of what is important to you..Do you haul kids and a dog?, tow a boat?, go off road?..drive in snowy marginal traction conditions?..
Over all?..At the 25k range. I'd go with a Subaru Forester or a Toyota RAV. Both are great crossover vehicles and do everything pretty well.
But if you insist on blowing that kind of money and a straight up car is what you want..I'd have to agree with the BMW or Volvo XC

It all depends on what your are looking for.
Right now I am in the process of replacing my Saab, I don't have that kind of money saved, but if I did I would buy a new Cadillac STS for a replacement. Since I only have about $25K saved and ready for car purchase I am buying a used Acura TL.
If I were to replace my truck it would be with a New 3500 Crew Cab LT Silverado.
You can buy a new 06 Escalade for 45K with the $15,000 promo out right now.
You can buy just about anything you want... what are you looking for??? What do you want in a car/truck/suv??? If I know these I can tell you exactly what you should get.

Buy Shelby Cobra Kit car. They have looks, speed, handleing, and with a small V-8 they get good mpg's for such a fast hot car.
I've spent 30 years in the commerical Body Shop biz, a Cobra is a lot of bang for your buck!

Gotta go with the Corvette. Of course I am biased...I own one.
Seriously though, as far as performance, fun, resale value and bang for the buck I just like the Vette. Of course the new ones might force you to stretch your cap a bit...I'm thinking in the $55-60 K range for a coupe or convertible, and more of course for the Z06.

In stead of buying one real nice vehicle for 50G's. I would buy two vehicles, a Honda Civic for everyday use and a Sport-ute for drives to the country.
I dont have 50G's, so I dont worry about what is best.

I agree, the BMW M3.
Can't go wrong, very well built, long lasting, great handling, lots of power.
No better resale value.

I have a corvette and I would buy another one, a new one will cost you anywhere from 43k to 85k depending on equipment. They hold their value well and you will never have a problem selling it.
