I just made a round-trip drive to CA from TX with an 11 y/o and a 2 y/o. First, have patience. You'll have to make a lot of stops so the kids can stretch their legs and burn off some energy. Second, bring music that they like. Sure, the Wiggles can get annoying after the 45th play, but if they are happy, they'll stay quieter. Third, bring things for them to do, but ration them out. Have washable crayons or washable markers and coloring books, reading books, games, etc. on hand. Then leave a box next to their seats so that they can throw the stuff into it when they're done. Yes, my 2 y/o has the hang of this. Fourth, play interactive games with them, like I-Spy, or what I call the license plate game. Take the random letters from other cars' license plates and make up acronyms for them (e.g. "TDM"=Totally Demented Mom).

Long car trips with kids aren't easy. I wish you lots of luck...!

I hate to assert this, notwithstanding the most acceptable lengthy holiday I had with small little ones replaced into with a DVD participant and some cartoons. I hate to assert it because i don't like the perception of the little ones observing television even as they should be playing the holiday. i ask your self in the experience that they are going to then strengthen up and in no way be in a position to in common words income from the experience later in life. i don't know. notwithstanding, i have taken the holiday between Nebraska and Oklahoma, and albeit, there is not some thing a lot to work out! LOL transportable DVD participant looked as if it would shop them occupied for hours.

Talk with them and play games that are sort of educational i.e. spell something you see or ... first person that can spot 10 red cars. Whatever you do you have to keep switching things out and be ready to just sometimes give them "veg" time.

Although we have them I'm not a big advocate of game boys, or LCD tv's or Video iPods. They take the fun and adventure out of a car trip and you don't get any family time anyway ... which is one of the advantages of going on a car trip.

My family and I used to go to Nova Scotia every summer, a 23-hour drive from Connecticut, and this was in the days before gameboy and portable DVD players and such. Although I did listen to a walkman occasionally, there were always fun car games to play (eye-spy, etc), and engaging in interesting conversation was always good. Also, the more stops you make to look at interesting things, or just to stretch, the less fussy they will get.

They make great travel DVD players, if there are more than one, I spy games, card games, travel games abound. Singing songs.
I don't like Game Boys because they are anti social. If course so are TVs but you can pick the subject for a DVD player.

My parents used to pack a bag with small, inexpensive toys, games, magazines, little surprises that they doled out one at a time. You could give them out whenever they get rowdy and bored, or at specified times, like every 30 miles or whatever. It worked for me and my sister, who would NOT stay on her side of the car :) !

the best investment we ever made in this situation was buying a portable dvd player, we have a 4 yr old who HATES being in the car & now shes entertained & happy, seriously its 100% worth whatever you pay for it!!

Bring a portable DVD player or invest in one to put in the car's headrest.

Or... take the bumpiest roads possible.. they will fall asleep.

NyQuil...

Just Kidding! The alphabet game always helps, as do gameboys, books, and travel board games.
