It depends entirely on your relations with your family. Have you any reason to believe that they have no trust in you. Trust breeds trust and suspicion breeds suspicion. If the relations are normal they will tell you truth always.

You Don't!!!!!! You only know what someone wants you to know and it may not neccessarily be the truth. It may be only enough to make them feel like they answered you without lying ot you or enough to end the topic be it true or not. Could you be more specific about the relative problem? My guess is that if they are not being honest with you about something important that affects you directly, they may either be protecting you from painful or hurtful or even dangerous information or people or the information they are withholding is relative to something the are either ashamed of or embarrassed about or something they deeply regret. We all have our little secrets. Sometimes you just have to believe that what you do not know is for yur own good.

You don't. You have to trust that they are telling the truth, because, most generally, people don't lie who love each other. If it is something specific and you are worried about it, ask them to tell you the real truth and see what happens.
