English Bulldog = British Bulldog they are the identical. British / English is oftentimes used on the grounds that the bulldog originated in England, high-quality Britain. Frequently a bulldog is reffered to because the English or British bulldog, however there are different types of bulldogs such as the French Bulldog and the American Bulldog which can be exclusive.

American Bulldog is actually what the English bulldog looked like when bull baiting was still legal in England. When the sport was banned, breed fanciers wanted to keep the breed around so they bred them down so that they could become lap dogs. Most people believe that they used the Pug to give the English bulldog the smashed in face and short legs.
The differences b/w the breeds is the English, having been bred to be a lap dog has a more laid back personality compared to the American. English Bulldogs tend to have a difficult time breathing when exposed to high humidity. As to which one is better that is really up to you and what you want out of the dog. If lap dog is what you are thinking then I recommend English but if you are a high energy type of person then the American might be more your style.

American bulldogs tend to be tall like a dalmation. The british bulldog is the short stocky dog with the smushed in face.

diff looks and bred for different purposes
british bulldog origin:
The original bulldogs of early 19th-century England were bred for bullbaiting and dogfighting and were ferocious and tenacious, but beginning in the 1830s, by which time these inhumane sports were illegal, bulldogs were bred to be gentle.
american bulldog origin:
Derived from English bulldog stock, the American bulldog originated in the United States in the 18th century. Traditionally, this breed has been used for working cattle and hogs and as a watchdog.

They look totally different for one, and British Bulldogs have a more laid back temperament - but they can be pretty slobbery, but they are also clowns!
American "Pits" have such a bad rap these days - and they are high strung, so you have to be prepared for that.
I personally LOVE British Bulldogs and would choose one over an ABT any day!

The British bulls are ugly as sin! They have bad teeth (Austin Powers joke) and are lazy. Most of the British bulls I have seen are friendly enough but they are no too playful from my experience.
The American ones that are my favorite breed are called "Pit bulls" and they are from the Terrier line. They are sexy, strong and great with children (do not believe what you hear in the news about them being killers). I would caution you on the "pit bull" if it is from a game line (the fighting dogs) it will have a tendency to be animal aggressive.
I myself have a Boxer named Lucy she is right at 65 pounds at 14 months old. She is smart, part of the bull line, scary (it is funny she loves everyone but she LOOKS SCARY - so she keeps the bad people at bay), playful and very pretty.
In general you can't go wrong with a Bull dog of any line they are GREAT pets! It is a matter of preference.
