postcards are the way to go. they are cheap and easy. my friend took a great black and white picture of a wooden white chair in front of the place they were married at, with a little sign on the chair stating "reserved". it was simple and very classy. they used a classy font and screened out the save the date info on the back of the postcard.
as for my wedding, i went the postcard route as well. my wedding was deco/hawaiiana themed so i used the "hula honies" postcards (which are old hawaiian/tiki bar advertisements) and used an art deco font to screen on the back of the post cards. everybody really liked them.
you could also go the magnet route, which is what my brother did. they took a cute picture of them at the beach and made a magnet out of it. on the bottom was printed the "save the date" and the actual date of the wedding. then they made a legal sized envelope-long cardstock paper of an actual calendar of that month and circled the date in red. it looked very cute.

Our save the date invitations were postcards, that looked like photo booth strips. There were 4 pictures and in each of them we were holding a sign. The top was "SAVE" then "THE" then "DATE" and the bottom said "7-23-05" - we got a lot of compliments on them and we were able to print them up ourselves. If you didn't want to do it as postcards, you could always print them up, glue them to magnets and have a kitchen magnet too.

Save the Date magnets are the way to go. They're not too expensive and your guests can stick them on their refridgerators. It's a way to ensure that they won't forget the date!

*mini calendars w/ your date circled
*photo-booth shots of you and your fiancee. the last shot should be of you 2 smooching and holding out a sign w/ your wedding date and the message "save the date". you can take a bunch of shots and photo shop them into the photo-booth strip. have them printed on magnets.
*wedding cake stickers w/ the save the date message printed on. then the guests can put the sticker in their own calendars.
*postcards -cheap and cute
*hand stamped specialty paper. you can pick any stamps you like at your local craft store (Michaels). include your wedding website address so they can get more info.
*large sugar cookies. hard icing. then you stamp the tops w/ your message. (use a piece of felt soaked in food coloring of your choice. dip rubber stamp into the self-made ink pad. stamp onto cookie- icing must be dry).
Hope these help!

do it with a webpage. it's cheap... and you really don't need a save the date if your wedding is in that calendar year... it's too much work...

Magnets are really cute. You can put your picture on them along with the details of your wedding and your guests can put them on their fridges to remind them!

Very elegant picture frame. Or you can always find some where where they preserve memories.
