I ask the student to step outside and I try to get to the bottom of the problem. I let them go to the restroom and clean up and I try to fix whatever the problem is.

First take the student outside the classroom, ask the student if they want to talk about it or not. If the student does want to talk about it to you've the student taken to the principals office and let the principal handle the problem. If the student want to talk to you about the problem, arrange a time after school to discuss the problem with the student, re-assure the student and comfort, without being overly empathetic. I think sometimes adults over compensate and become too empathetic. I don't think students think this is being sincere.

It sounds to me as if you have serious issues with this teacher and that you are intent to show her in a bad light. I am always wary of just hearing one side of the situation. I am sure that your teacher would have a very different tale to tell. It is very easy to wind your father up so that he storms into the school but this does not really do you any good in the long run. You have to learn that you cannot always rely on other people in life to get you out of sticky situations. The fact that you have said that you hate her and described her as a "creature" shows that you do not have a sense of perspective. You are basically out to get her regardless of what is right or wrong. I do not have a lot od sympathy with this question.

Ask the student if he would like to go to the restroom, to see the nurse, to see a counselor, or to just step outside to compose himself. If you are alone in the room with him, you can certainly ask what the matter is. If he's in detention after school, that might be why he's crying.

Tough one - this happens a lot in high school. I let them know that I'm there if they need to talk, and I offer to let them see a counselor if needed. I also let them go to the restroom to compose themselves.
