Does anybody know if it's possible for my cat to be FIV Negative if his mother and all the kittens in his litter tested positive and have since passed. He has lost tremendous amounts of weight over the last few weeks and has a balance problem and uneven pupils. he was tested for FIV and was negative. I just can't put my faith in this test result. Should I believe that he's negative like the test says?

The FIV test detects antibodies, not the virus itself. If the mother and all littermates tested positive it's very unlikely your kitty was spared. However, in end-stage FIV infection the immune system no longer produces antibodies so you could get a false negative test result at that poiint.

Sorry not to have more positive news. Hugs to your kitty.

I wouldn't put all my faith in just one test. I recommend going to a different veterinarian for a second opinion or requesting that your veterinarian do a different type of test. There are several ways to test for FIV. The snap test is most popular because it is fast and easy. However, There are other tests you can do that are more sensitive. This would require sending the results to an outside laboratory. Be sure to keep your cat inside and a way from other cats for now. Good luck!

depends on when the test was done the first time. If done too early you could have a false negative. I would get another test and see what the outcome is. I do not think it would be possible for him to be negative if his mother and siblings all were positive

Have your vet send a new test to a lab. Vets today do in house testing in a small kit. and it is about 30% wrong. Have him tested for FIV FELV and do a full panel screening to check all his organs and blood for andthing eles, Cancer or a tumor could cause this too do not use pedialyte it contains ingrediants thay can couse your cat to die

the vet told me that the first test was not reliable. my kitten was very young. they do have a vaccine for FIV. get the vaccination since he tested negative. It is amazing-for $75 (for that one test alone)they told me that the cat did not have FIV but that I needed to re-test when the cat is older. The doctors can not vaccinate people against it-but the vets can vaccinate cats...hum...

I would take the cat to another vet to get a second opinon , sounds to me like the kitty is getting sicker . The kitty could also be dehydrated try to give the kitty pedialyte or something like it . It's usually found in the isle with baby products , still take the kitty to another vet for a second opinon

Get him to a *good* vet. It sounds very much like that test was wrong. I'm so sorry. He may still be able to be treated, for a time, even though he can't be cured.

Take him to another vet as soon as possible. The whole thing doesn't make sense. If nothing else, you will put your mind at ease. And yes - he could possibly be negative.

it may be that because his mom's immune system was compromised, he didn't get the antibodies he needed and has caught something else thats long term in nature- if he's had his shots- get him tested for anything else- he also might have developed a reaction to the shots themselves- if he hasn't had shots, he needs to be tested for the basic illnesses,pronto-worms?maybe-i know, its expensive- good luck
