Read Doctrine and Covenants section 76. The missionaries should have been able to help you...
starting at Verse: 71 And again, we saw the terrestrial world, and behold and lo, these are they who are of the terrestrial, whose glory differs from that of the church of the Firstborn who have received the fulness of the Father, even as that of the moon differs from the sun in the firmament.
72 Behold, these are they who died awithout law;
73 And also they who are the spirits of men kept in prison, whom the Son visited, and preached the gospel unto them, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh;
74 Who received not the testimony of Jesus in the flesh, but afterwards received it.
75 These are they who are honorable men of the earth, who were blinded by the craftiness of men.
76 These are they who receive of his glory, but not of his fulness.
77 These are they who receive of the apresence of the Son, but not of the fulness of the Father.
78 Wherefore, they are bodies terrestrial, and not bodies celestial, and differ in glory as the moon differs from the sun.
79 These are they who are not valiant in the btestimony of Jesus; wherefore, they obtain not the crown over the kingdom of our God.
80 And now this is the end of the vision which we saw of the terrestrial, that the Lord commanded us to write while we were yet in the Spirit.
• • •
91 And thus we saw the glory of the terrestrial which excels in all things the glory of the telestial, even in glory, and in power, and in might, and in dominion.
D&C 88: 23, 30, 38
23 And he who cannot abide the law of a terrestrial kingdom cannot abide a terrestrial glory.
• • •
30 And they who are quickened by a portion of the terrestrial glory shall then receive of the same, even a fulness.
• • •
38 And unto every kingdom is given a law; and unto every law there are certain bounds also and conditions.
Outer darkness is for VERY VERY bad people, we have been taught very few people will be there.
Any more questions, I wouls be glad to answer!

There are different levels of heaven. G-d is in the highest (the Celestial kingdom) along with the Mormons who did all they had to do, like baptism, temple endowments, marriage and did a good job while alive also they become godlike themselves. The next level is the Terrestrial kingdom where Jesus visits and is where good people go if they did not believe enough or fell for the "craftiness of man"
the 3rd is the Celestial kingdom where bad people go (liars, adulterers and those who did not receive the teachings. They have to go to the "spirit prison" before they can go to level 2 of heaven
. Really really bad people go to the outer darkness.
Hope this was helpful, I got this from Wikepedia and clicked on links to the different heaven levels.

Ok, there are 3 degrees of glory - or rather 3 Kindoms in Heaven.
The telestial kingdom is the lowest kingdom. It has a glory compared to the brightness of the stars. (See D&C 76:81.)
The terrestrial kingdom is the middle kingdom. It has a glory compared to the brightness of the moon. (See D&C 76:71.)
- This is where all good people will reside in the here after, Jesus Christ reigns over this Kingdom.
The celestial kingdom is the highest kingdom. It has a glory compared to the brightness of the sun. (See D&C 76:70.)
- This is where the most righteous will reside in the presence of Heavenlt Father (any person has the potential to make it here, whether they accept the gospel in this life or the next, but they need to be bapstised by the proper preisthood authority. This is why we perform baptisms for the dead by proxy).
Basically, the whole 76th section of the Doctrine and Covenants deals with this subject. It is too lengthy to post here.

I am suprise that the missionaries you met was not able to answer your question.
Concerning other Christians not of the lDS faith, or any other faith, we believe God has place for them, and you are right, is not outer darkness, or hell which some called.
Like a few other LDS said,
After judement, we are to be sent to different places according to our righteousness and obedience to God's laws.
1st- Celestial Kingdom- for those who is obedience in all laws.
2nd- Telestial Kingdom- for those who is not too good, but are good people.
3nd- Terrestial Kingdom- for those like murderer, unrepented etc.
Outer Darkness- which is not even consider as any kindom or glory in heaven - for those who knows the truth, yet denies God.
e.g Lucifer would be there.

Mormons believe that when you die you do not go straight to Heaven or Hell if it's before judgement day. If you are generally a good person you would go to Paradise. If not you would go to outer darkness. In Paradise you can continue to learn about things. When judgement day occurs Mormons believe that there are 3 kingdoms to heaven, and that you as a good person would go to one of those kingdoms, it would obviously be up to the Lord. Docterine and Covenants section 76 covers these beliefs. I hope this helps.

Totally not true, Christians will not go to outer darkness. We believe all good people will go to Heaven. There are levels of glory, or heaven though. Those who accept the Gospel will go to the highest or Celestial kingdom. But good Christians who do not wish to join the Church will still go to the Telestial Kingdom, which is still a glorious place, beyond imagination.

I have lived in Arizona for over 30 years and was married to a Mormon for most of that time. As far as I know, they don't believe anyone who isn't Mormon can get into heaven, unless they are already dead and a living person is baptized in their name in the here and now.

No one but God knows where a particular person goes when they die. We have been given guidelines that describe types of people and where they go (The most descriptive being D&C 76). But as to whether a certain person fits into one of those descriptions can't be known by us, only God. He will put each person where he/she will feel most comfortable
