i been reading somewhere that Muhammad (P) mentioned a story of a prostitute who has been forgiven because she gave water to a dog. is that true?

In Islam, a sin can be forgiven through repentance. A good deed shall be counted, even if it is the weight of an atom.

Yes if you are doing that for God's sake then it is considered charity. Moreover if you plant a tree, you will be rewarded whenever any creature benefits from that tree, be it a human being or an animal.

That is correct. Islam is mercy not only for humans but also for animals but many people know only Muslims are terrorist!
