1 to 3 miles across is about right. They have already started buying up land in the "Delray" district of south west Detroit to start construction in 2008 to build a second bridge to Canada. I'm not sure if will hit Windsor Ontario, but the city south of Windsor named Amherstberg. You got answers informing you of the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor tunnel. There is also a railroad tunnel leaving the Detroit train station that goes under the Detroit river to Canada. Many people have used it to sneak into the country. Also the Detroit river is not a real river, it's only called that. It's a straight. This is the correct term but people call it a river. It connects Lake Erie to Lake St. Clare. Where I live I can swim, boat or jet ski there, the latter only takes me a few minutes. There are also many small islands, the largest one is a township with many residents, with 2 bridges crossing what is called the Trenton Channel. This long island is (depending on which nautical map you look at) is in the Detroit river. These bridges open up for large ships but the big freighters take the channel on the other side of the isle next to Canada and go under the Ambassador bridge. For miles (some say 7 some say 9) you just see Canada up close. On each side of the river you have houses facing houses, parks facing parks and downtown of course the Detroit sky line facing the Windsor sky line. Many of the small islands are either municipal owned or privately owned. A friend of mine purchased an island that used to have a mansion on it, but was ransacked after the owner left it. He had plans to develope it but it's mainly used for young people who "party" on it. Some of the islands have people docking boats and building camp fires and spending the night. It was a whole lot of fun before 9/11 and homeland security. We crossed the river all the time while boating (Michigan has the largest number of registered boats per person in the U.S.) and would often stop in Canada for a beer at the bar or dinner and all we were required to do was call the Canadian authorities and let them know how long we would be, but most the time we never called. I don't know today but before 9/11 it was the most laxed international boarder in the world. When crossing the bridge or tunnel, customs would just ask what youre citizenship was and when you said U.S. they would wave you through. My map shows that the point that lake Erie and the Detroit river meet is at the foot of a street named Oak in the City of Wyandotte. This city, est. in 1852, is about 3 miles land and about 5 miles by water from Detroit, and you can see them both from each other. Detroit also has an island called Belle Isle that has a bridge for cars to cross. But any where along the Detroit river, you can see houses and cars in Canada and you think, I could swim that. I never tried to, even though I was a life guard for the YMCA when I was a teenager, because the current has a nasty under tow and even professional divers have drowned. To give you an Idea how close and how fast you can cross the river, recently (no lie it was in the news) several Asian men dressed in proper bussiness suits were caught by authorities riding jet skis across the river from Canada to the city of Wyandotte. Oh, and as far as directions, most people don't know that Detroit Mi. is North of Windsor Ontario. Look at a map. I even heard it in a Trivial Pursuit question phrased " what country lies directly south of Detroit ?". The answer, of course is Canada.

At the shortest it is 1 mile wide, while the widest point being 3.3 miles wide. You have 2 options for crossing from one country to the next. When crossing from Detroit into Windsor the Ambassador Bridge will take you to Huron Church Rd. on the west side of the city, whereas the Windsor - Detroit tunnel will let you off on Park St. in the downtown core of Windsor.
