A controlled experiment is made up of 2 groups: the control group and the experimental group.
The experimental group is the one that gets the actual treatment, while the control group gets a placebo and is made to think that they got the actual treatment. This way, if the treatment really is effective, the patients in the experimental group will no longer show symptoms of whatever was being treated.
