What should I eat for the next few days after my 10-day water fast?
I just came off a 10 day fast where I drank only water and ate nothing. THe first 2 days sucked but overall it was a great way to detox my system, and it gave me lots of energy. I guess the only thing I didn't think about before I started was this: What do I eat first? This fast was not a weight-loss plan (I only lost 2 pounds anyway) but I still DON'T want to gain weight when I start eating. What's the best thing to start back with? Should I go the next week on vegetables or something? I just don't want to gain weight because my weight is ideal for me right now.
I am not thinking about doing this - I already did it, so don't lecture me please! Also, I am NOT overweight, and I did NOT fast for weight loss - it was for detoxing and also spiritual reasons.

One thing I've learned from years of fasting....NEVER break a fast too fast. You've got the right idea with starting slow on fruits and vegetables. I'd start with juices, teas fresh fruit and raw veggie soups and salads for the next week. Add cooked veggies and brown rice the next week. Stay away from processed foods because it's a real slippery slope to "re-toxing" yourself. Add proteins in on the third week. Eat smaller meals more often throughout the day. Drink water with slices of cucumber or citrus to help hydrate more efficiently. Your body is still detoxing, so keep foods simple and healthy for longterm results.

The real key to losing weight and keeping it off is behavior modification. So I hope you don't plan after a 10-day water fast, and another few days to dive right back into whatever got you so overweight. In other words you may need to find a good dietitian, health food, or otherwise and when it comes right down to it they say "portion size" is the key. Eventually you will end up eating out with a friend or being served a normal plate of food somewhere, and knowing instinctual (or learned) when to stop eating is the best. Not when the food on the plate is gone or you are REALLY full, but before. There is also some truth to "you are what you eat" so learn nutrition facts and watch what you eat... make it count. Try Jamba Juice smoothies, they can be meal nourishing replacement for weight maintenance or supplements for people gaining weight intentionally, like me.

Fasting is the most liberating and probably the most incredible way of ridding the body of all the toxins stored in your body from all the processed crap that America calls food. I am 58 years old and after a 10 day waterfast, I lost 18 pounds, my blood pressure went down over 30 points, and the shortness of breath from walking up stairs went away. I feel so much younger and I was able to keep the weight off by changing the way I felt about food. I only eat vegetables fruit and fish. very few grains but I keep everything balanced.
I broke my fast with half an orange, and a cup of natural organic popcorn... then for dinner, I had a spinach and cucumber salad. The next day, I ate an orange, and blueberries for breakfast with green tea. I stayed on the raw diet for 4 days before I added lightly steamed vegetables. I still feel young and energetic. I have a very muscular physique and if not for my gray hair a baldness, no one can guess how old I am... :-)
