I am 57, female, overweight (have been for 30 years). Just in the last 2 years this has become a problem. I get a 10 scale pain as blood pressure cuff is most inflated. Can't believe my BP readings are accurate. Not sure what to do about it. Better on right arm than on left, but right is becoming like left. This is a change after years of having blood pressure taken.

First of all---you should know that there are more appropriate sized cuffs for us larger folks. If they are using a "regular sized" cuff for you then you are going to get an erroneous reading anyway. Smaller cuffs on larger arms usually reflect higher blood pressure. Also---you should only be taking your pressure WEEKLY not hourly. Best pressure reading and most accurate will come from you LEFT ARM. When it starts to hurt you should tell the person who is taking the pressure it is high enough to start the reading. Unless your pressure is over 180 over something---you should not go higher than that.

An hypertensive patient should be monitored for blood pressure. In a correct method of measuring B.P a slight pain may be felt due to the pressure of the cuff. Cuff should be inflated up to a certain limit and it is not the same for every person. All medical graduate know that I believe. If you feel severe pain then tell it to your Doctor there must be a solution. Best of luck.

My mom has really high blood pressure and has to get it checked a lot. Next time you go ask if they will use the bigger cuff for you. They may have to go in the back and get one but most doctors office's have a bigger cuff. If that doesn't help then maybe you should ask your doctor.
