There is actually a natural process that occurs as we pass through the stages towards sleep. Usually they happen fairly quickly, you just appear to be stalled in one particular stage.

Our brains actually "paralyze" our bodies to keep us safe while we sleep. This prevents the majority of people from sleepwalking. This is why we don't act out our dreams. You might be able to move a hand or wiggle a foot but for the most part your brain turns off your body so you won't "Fall out of the tree".

Sometimes this awakeness strikes suddenly while people are already dreaming. The mind tries to reconcile the dream world and the awake world. This combined with the paralysis is often terrifying. These are then called "Night Terrors". They are very common in children under the age of 5. Most people grow out of them but some people do not.

There is a chance you have a sleep disorder and you may want to meet with a specialist. Especially if you have daytime drowsiness. Or it interferes with your life. They may be able to help. In the mean while start keeping a journal about when it occurs, and what was happening the evening before. This may help you pinpoint any triggers.

Otherwise you may be one of the few people who are able to have more control over their dreams than normal. This is called "Lucid dreaming". Try moving into your dreamscape but maintaining consciousness. You may be able to control the direction your dream takes as an active participant. There are many books on the topic.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with you. it's SP (sleep paralysis). it's common and it's cool. After a while you get better and better at it. the first time it happened to me, it took me a while to move. then it happened again and it took me even less time. the third time it happened...my head exploded.

I keed, I keed. but no, seriously, enjoy it. yet another mystery of the human brain. just do a google search on "sleep paralysis" and you'll find out a lot on it. it's being studied all over the place. in the middle ages, people who experienced this phenomenom had no way of scientifically justifying it to themselves. This is how myths such as succubus and incubus encounters evolved, as well of the myth of the "old hag." in those days, when a woman would experience what we now call "sleep paralysis," it was said that the spirit of the old hag was trying to tell them they were pregnant, which makes sense because anyone who's been pregnant knows that your sleep patterns get all fekked up.

don't be afraid or bothered by it; it's fun. but if you want to stop it, drink less coffee and try and establish a more regimented sleeping pattern. im practically an insomniac so i sleep whenever i feel like it. but when i drink a lot of coffee and i'm stressed out...i get the old hag. hey maybe i'm pregnant.

oh and did you know Sheryl Crow has said in an interview with ABCnews that she too has experienced it?

Also, if you hear strange noises or "sense a presence"---that too is normal. see, that, my friend, is more a matter of human nature than brain activity. often when we cannot identify the source of a problem, we create a stereotypical solution. it's why you always hear some lady saying "It was too dark and I didn't see my mugger at all...but I'm pretty sure he was Black." lol. we just looove preserving stereotypes. a lot of people think SP is behind all of those "alien abduction" stories. what you hear and sense during an episode of SP is completely up to you and how imaginative you are. but the activity itself is completly natural....and makes a great story for online communities.

it's called sleep paralysis; and it happens to me all the time. There are many documented studies on this phenomenon that can be found all over the net. In the old days it was called "the old Hag" she would come and sit on your chest while you are sleeping and you wouldn't be able to move. More than likely it's has more to do with anxiety, restlessness and being really tired then falling asleep while your mind wants to wake up. Or it's just spirits taking over your body. In any case just breathe and relax until it subsides, imagine a bubble or your ora surrounding your body until it passes. The possiblity of outer body experience is also a good reason; could your soul be hovering over your body and be half in and half out. You don't need a doctor unless you feel sick or pain while experiencing this. The only thing I experienced was a good fright until you learn how to control it.

I suggest you talk with other people about this. I think what you are describing may be a normal response. If you can't get going as soon as you want to, then it is a problem. I suggest you see a doctor about it, but be prepared to be very specific in answering questions: how long are you unable to move? How often does it happen? Have you had anything to drink or taken drugs before you wen to sleep. A good doctor will help you sort this out. You may feel frightened by this, and a good doctor should be sympathetic and understanding. If you are met with rude behavior, please find another doctor. Like any unusual behavior linked with sleep, IF this is unusual, it could be serious. I encourage you to pursue getting an answer with which you are comfortable. Best wishes to you.

It's actually due to a chemical that is naturally released by the body during the normal sleep cycle. People who sleep walk don't have the chemical keeping their bodies still. Think of it as a defense mechanism so you don't do something you can only do in your dreams.

an out of body experience i believe. psychologically speaking, i guess it is a type of REM sleep.. but this has still been in the dark. many people experience it, since i have also experienced it.

Many have linked it with the occult and demonic possesion but i guess they weren't as true.

maybe your mind has been restless about certain thoughts.. try to relax your mind before sleeping. this could help to lessen the occurence.

in here, it called "eureup-eureupan"
it happens when your brain is not ready to move your muscular things, but your mind is somehow completely rendering all of your vision and memory.
the problems just about nerve connections,
don't try too harsh to move your body, because it won't move at all. just be calm and close your eyes, and wait for 2-3 minutes.
it'll get back to normal.

Ya, if ya wake up durin REM sleep (normal) then you c an't move for a few moments. But if tis happens very frequently maybe you should ask a doc or sleep specialist.

yup that happens to me all the time. its like you can see yourself fighting to wake up and its like you cant your body is numb.. now what i do since ive had them a few times is relax and well im concious so i start thinking wake up wake up wake up and then i wake up. but its weird cause you can see your room the way its is in detail and your clothes and your face thats kind of creepy lol i also have the ability to pinch my self likeif my hands are near any part of my body lol...

i used to think that i had been ubducted by aliens but we may never know the millions of things we are capable of doing the minds is very tricky i also see dead people lol maybe im just coo coo
