Yes, Brigham Young and Orin Rockwell had beards. Have you noticed that styles have changed since then?
The way you cut your hair, whether or not you have a beard, the kind of clothes you wear make a difference in the impression you make on other people. That changes with time. If you wore a robe today people would look at you funny. If you wore trousers at the time of Christ people would look at you funny then. You have to wear the style of clothes appropriate to the time and place, or you make a negative impression.
Perhaps all of your friends and acquaintances think your beard looks cool and makes you look more distinguished, or mature, or handsome or whatever. Perhaps none of them have any negative feelings about beards. I used to have a beard myself. But some people do have negative feelings about beards. They think that you want to be on the edge, rather than be a clean-cut serious good guy. They think that you are somewhat rebellious to the conventions and standards of society. They think that you are trying to show defiance to social norms. They think you are willing to compromise your standards in order to be in with the cool crowd. A beard makes a negative impact on some people in our day and age, even though it didn’t make such an impact in the time of Brigham Young.
Now, we might think these folks are silly. We might think that we don't need to mind what they think at all. But do we? Paul talked about avoiding the very appearance of sin. If we lead away the weak among us by our example, certainly it is their fault for being weak, but are we innocent? Is it too much to ask to have you shave off your beard if your beard is leading some youth to commit sins?

Who frowns on beards? Sounds like another Urban legend!!! Being clean shaven is just a way of looking your best. Some men have beards, some don't. My husband has a goatee and mustache and he attends the temple that way. It's really not a big deal.
Think about it back then, trying to shave with a knife or something...wouldn't you have a beard too?

There's nothing that says Mormons can't have beards. Are you asking why students at BYU aren't allowed to have beards? I'm not sure of the answer to that question either, but I think it has something to do with the fact that they want the students to be well-groomed and not sloppy.

Beards are not frowned upon, although a clean-shaven face is preferred. By being clean-shaven, men show that they are trying to keep themselves neat and clean. This is not saying that a beard cannot be neatly kept. It is like dressing modestly. No one is forced to wear modest clothing, but it is a choice that is highly preferred. It shows that they care about their body as the gift that God has given them. The body is a temple as the Bible says. The temple grounds are also kept neat. It just shows how much we care.
