I had a chemo appointment scheduled for today and I met with the Dr. before and he told me my platelets were low and that I could have my treatment next week.

Your platelets can only be raised by a platelet transfusion. Depending on how low they are, depends on whether or not he decides to transfuse you. You platelets can get to nearly zero (0) before you start to have symptoms of bleeding. In the meantime, if you cut yourself or get hurt, apply firm pressure for a couple of minutes before you let go. If anything bleeds and will not stop, call the doctor. If you have any blood in your stools or urine, call the doctor
PS: I am a chemotx nurse. Good luck with your treatment next week.

I don't know of anything to boost your platelet level. I have ITP so what keeps my level "normal" is prednizone usually 1 or 2 a day,Maybe ADP? I would stay away from asprin too. I have had a few platelet transfusions as well, sorry i haven't been much of a help but good luck. ...Oh and how low are they?!?!

Avoid alcohol and aspirin. I don't know if you can make your platelets go up, but it is normal for them to fluctuate during chemo. Mine did.

A little side note to Dane (answer right below me)....I had ITP when I was younger too. It eventually took care of itself and my levels are fine now. It seems like you have had a serious case of ITP, hope things get better for you....

Sorry that you have that horrible disease. My grandmother fought it for almost 6 years before it took her from me. The doctor told her to drink 8 ounces of red wine everynight and it will raise her white blood count and I am not sure but I think he said platelets too.

Your body will have to do that. Chemo had depressed your bone marrow a bit.

Brewers Yeast tablets (health food store)
My brother has cancer and his chemo did that to him also. My mom had him take some brewers yeast and they shot up.

Why didn't you just ask your doctor while you were there? Hope you get well...
