I've been reading the new testement recently and I've come accross some interesting verses.

Matthew 16:28, 24:34
Mark 9:1, 13:30
Luke 9:27, 21:32

In these passages Jesus seems to be saying quite clearly that the kingdom of God will arrive within the lifetime of those present (the disciples).

Why are we then 2000 years later still waiting?

I have someone that told me that the world has been judged already because of these Scriptures. In Lk 9:27 he was referring to(1) Peter, James, and John who would witness the Transfiguration 8 days later;(2) all who would witness the Resurrection and Ascension; (3) all who would take part in spreading of the church after Pentecost. Jesus' listener wouldn't have to wait for another, future Messiah. The Kingdom was among them, and would soon come in power. You should invest in a study bible, I find the life application study bible awesome and it comes in any translation that's easier for you to understand.

Yes, you are reading it wrong.

Matthew 16:28 and Mark 9:1 and Luke 9:27 Are spoken just before HIS transfiguration which was witnessed by Peter and John. These verses are in reference to this event.

Matthew 24:34 & Mark 13:30 and Luke 21:32
If you read a little before these statements The disciples asked when HIS second coming would be. "THIS GENERATION" refers to the generation that Christ comes NOT the present generation of Jesus HIMSELF.

Glad to hear your reading the New Testament

I think you are confusing the end of the world and the Resurrection. In these verses Jesus is talking about himself "the kingdom of God" And how he will be put to death and then be resurrected. This will start the new kingdom of God. which will be fully realized after the end of the world.

He also goes on to say that no man, not even he knows when the end will come. Only God himself knows.

So to quote Obi Wan "What I said was true, from a certain point of view"

Hi..Good question...are you fishing , or asking ? with respect !
I believe this way :
Luke 17 v 21 (amongst many other versus )The Kingdom of God is clearly within man, Jesus showed his deciples how and why, and then told them to go and tell all, the Kingdom of God is come nigh.He also told them they are members of his body, and many are still awaiting Him , like the woman at the well ?
To see it people have to be reborn, meaning to have a spiritual mind, spiritual ears and eyes.
Think about this one as well ...Jesus , ( the highest authority )opened the minds of his deciples to understand the scriptures, does this mean everybody before them misunderstood ?
We cannot mix the physical and the spiritual.
I Kor 2 verses 12 to 16.
i wonder if whether you agree with me ?

The kingdom of God is, obviously, heaven. Jesus is kind of like the 'key' to heaven, and his death was like the opening of it, so the coming of the kingdom of God is Jesus' death and ressurrection.
According to the Bible, these things did happen during the lifetime of the disciples so Jesus fulfilled what he said God sent him to do.

You can see this from Matthew 13:10-11: The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?" He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them."
At this time, the notions of Heaven and Hell weren't widely appreciated like they are today. Jesus spoke in parables so the people who didn't yet know of heaven and hell could begin to understand them as concepts. Once he died and rose again, the disciples were able to go out and tell the message to people fully.

What Jesus is talking about is HIS kingdom - Jesus' new covenant of His personal attoning sacrifice for the sins of the entire world.

He was basically saying, "You apostles will all personally see me establish the promise that God the Father told you about in the Old Testament when I go to the cross."

jesusfreak and williamzo gave excellent answers. It is what I would have said.

The Bible never contradicts itself. With a little study, and a good commentary, all verses support each other. Some are a little hard to understand. But if you have any serious questions, I will be happy to help when I can. You can go to the following website and email me your questions. There are also free bible studies there that help.

Many of those verses refer more to the destruction of Jerusalem by Roman armies (before most of the apostles had died) than it did Christ's second coming.
