Ok - I saw the rest of your posts - don't get a dog until you know what you are looking for (you have mentioned big and small dogs - and are all over with what breeds you are looking at). I have worked at a shelter for 5+ years, and I have seen the place flooded with unwanted animals because people did not think before they bought. Make a list of what you are looking for in a dog (size, energy level, health, coat care...then pick a dog that matches that!!!)
All too often dogs and cats end up the victims when people decide that they are too big, have too much energy, are too expensive, and they don't have enough time for them. Check out the link to picking out a dog, pleeeeeeeeease.

Great Danes are big dogs but make lousy guard dogs. They were not bred for that.
Many breed make good guard dogs but it takes much training and working with the handler for this to happen.
Look at the problems with pittbulls. They are tough but most are poorly or not all trained and they can be a problem.
Depending on your ability and situation there are many breeds you could look at.
Keep in mind guard dogs do not live in your home they are not a family pet they are not ever to be around anyone other than the handler and they are not to be walked or have any type of socialization. They are a working dog with a job to do and not truly what most people want around their home.
Most people want a protective dog for the home one that is good with family, guard dogs are not.
Be careful what you look at.

I have a Great Dane/ Black Lab mix and he is great in every way. He is wonderful with family and friends but has a very deep formidable bark...very intimidating (although he isn't himself).
We have the best of all worlds, he is gentle and we know it but a stranger certainly wouldn't. No one would ever come into our house with him here.
Guard dog and best pal...can't beat it!!!

it would depend on what you want it for.not all big and strong make good protection dogs as they are just big babies.ans some little dogs make great watch dogs but really cant protect you personally.if you want a large dog as a companion and as protection,i would go with a german shepherd, boxer, aussie, dobie or rottie.all are great dogs with training and are very loving to thier people but do tend to think of you as belonging to them, which can be great.

I would say German shepherd, I have had a lab and they are not aggressive at all! Really good family dogs but not really good watch dogs!

newfoundland are huge dogs. Just looking at one would scare a lot of people away. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Bullmastiff
it may not be the biggest but it is a great dog.
They are great guard dogs but also good family dogs. And they can be both.
