It's interesting that your dog circles clockwise. South of the equator they go the other way, just like water down the plug hole.
Oh they circle to get a comfortable spot.

It is an instinct that is in all cats and dogs, they circle around to make sure the area they have chosen to lay is safe from: snakes, bugs , traps, etc. By pawing at the ground, the ensure this.

It's an instinct from when they were wild - they circle around to tramp down the tall grass so they can lie down and also cause if they just crush the grass where they are the grass around them will still be tall and predators won't b able to see them =D

in the wild dogs would find hay or straw like materials to sleep on to keep warm and it is true that they are getting their bed right by standing all over it to flatten certain bits your dog may have a flat bed anyway but it's instinct that they always do it

its an instinct from way back when they used to pad down the grassy area they were going to settle in to in the wild.
(most) cats do the same or they sometimes claw the area gently before settling.

It is an instinct like mentioned above. Wild dogs like to burrow or dig a hole to sleep in so they feel safe.

A lot of dogs do this to make sure no other dog has been in their territory. Or either they are trying to get comfy.

well, being a dog, it's a habit that i can't get out of, i mean, you have to check for bugs or any animal, and it helps coushin the bed so it's extra comfortable, :)...makes me want to take a nap.

Yeah. I think it kind of softens up their bed... same as you slapping your pillow a couple times before you lay down to soften it up.
