Match sticks or a slice of white bread in your mouth while peeling. Also helps to freeze the onion slightly before cutting. Keeps the juice and the vapors from flying around as much...

Simple: run cool water over the onion after you cut off the ends or cut it in half. The gas onions emit when contacts water (tears) turns to sulfuric acid. Who knew?

If you have contacts wear them, your eyes won't burn. If not, breath through your mouth while you peel and cut up the onion, they won't bother you. I hope this helps.

Try putting the onions in the refrigerator. Well chilled onions don't seem to cause your eyes to tear up. I don't know why... But give it a try.

Cool the onion first in the fridge or freezer then cut while holding a matchstick, piece of bread or saltine cracker in your mouth. Works every time.
