Is the body inherently disfunctional, or are these teeth usefull, and why do some people believe these teeth need to be surgically removed?

1. Viva la variety, some people have attached earlobes and some
Have detached. Some people have wisdom teeth and some do not. It is genetic.

2. It is medically necessary to remove wisdom teeth if you do not have enough space in your jaw for all your teeth. They can become "impacted" meaning they run into other things. The can com in at a 45 degree angle facing the front of the mouth. This pushes on the molars in front of them. The top wisdom teeth also have roots that can reach into the sinus cavity. This can become infected, if the wisdom tooth has any problems. Also there can be nerve issues. All of these reasons may make it reasonable to remove the teeth.

3. The human body is not a perfect machine. Here is the trick about evolution. It only works on anything that kills you before you reproduce. So anything that happens after your matting years has a much smaller effect on your genes being passed down.

So first your wisdom teeth have to come in. This happens around 18. Then they have to be a problem, like get infected or cause another tooth to fail. This may take another few years to really develop. Then it has to be a big enough problem it either effects your ability to eat, or attract a mate. And you cannot have already have had children.

You see why many more people in the population have this special situation than something that would more seriously impair your ability to survive in a Neolithic era, like a club foot?

Anyhow, some people are able to fit all their teeth in their head. If you have a large jaw it works out fine. Or if you lose a molar it is able to "drift" and sort of take its place, preventing all your teeth from drifting to fill the gap.

Hope that helps.

wisdom teeth are evidence of our evolution. we don't need that many teeth anymore, so some people are born without all or some of them (i only have 2 of mine) and those with them may never have them come out.
but since our jaw is evolving to be smaller, and the teeth just haven't caught up yet, we have these extra teeth that can cause crowding and even pain if they're not removed in some people.

did you know that if at birth your parents had taped your pointer and index fingers together and your ring and pinky fingers together, and left them that way for your entire life, and you did the same to your kids, etc etc, it wouldn't be too many generations before someone was born with only 2 large fingers on each hand.

freaky, huh?

I had my wisdom teeth removed (there were only three) because there wasn't enough room in my mouth for them to come in. My husband has all four of his and they came in just fine. Who knows?

mine were pulled when I was 13 (came in early) due to not having enough space in my mouth for them. Actually, I also got 4 other permanent teeth pulled due to lack of space. My husband still has his, I guess it's all in if you have enough room. Maybe they're extras in case you loose a tooth.

they are just teeth that come in when you are older...hence "wisdom teeth" and no they don't need to be removed unless they give a problem like overcrowding

some people like myself do not have enough jaw bone to have the space for them.it'll mess up a pretty smile if they stay.by that i mean your teeth would get real crooked

You might try a second opinion from another dentist.

Most people have wisdom teeth, and I dunno why. But they are usually pulled to prevent over-crowding in the mouth, and to prevent cavities and such.
