Two things.
1. Check if the camcorder is recognized by windows. You should plug it in, switch it on and look in "my computer" to see if it is listed under devices.
2. See if another program recognises it. Try downloading a free video editing tool, like Virtual dub, installing it, then looking under the "file" menu and choosing "capture avi".

If you don't get any sucess with either of these ideas, then you are surely missing the drivers necessary. Go onto the website of the camera manufacturer and see if you can download them.

I only connected camcorders to a computer via firewire.
I'll try to write the problems I experienced maybe they'll help:

First of all it's the operating system that has to recognize the camcorder not the program.

When trying to capture, the camcorder has to be turned on, and on player mode (for importing footage on tape)

Sometimes the program just doesn't detect the camcorder. In those cases
I unplug-replug,
turn camcorder off/on,
restart the computer
and acoording to its mood the computer detects it. (don't you just hate pcs sometimes)

Good luck

Buy a firewire and make sure you have a firewire card installed inside your computer and plug it into your computer and camcorder.
Once that is done a pop-up down the bottom should appear.
Use A editing program or movie maker and import away.

Your problem is really you don't a firewire card installed on your computer.
Buy one from any computer store they cost about $60 AUD.

We had this problem for a job we were doing and finally found out the problem.
Hope this helps

You may possibly have to install a driver (only if an additional CD came with the camcorder).

Introduce them to each other
Say hello this is my camcorder
