For me I would have to say there were two memorable times: once flying over the snow-capped Rockies in a small plane en route to Rock Springs, Wyoming that was shaking furiously in some really bad turbulence. I recall just looking down at those barren peaks, which really weren't that far away, and thinking "What on Earth would I do and where on Earth would I go there, assuming we survived a crackup?" The other was landing in Phoenix in a lightning storm and watching that fire peel down from the sky in a shiny, deadly rivulet not that far from the plane. These experiences were somewhat reminiscent of some flights during the Vietnam war, but in very different circumstances. During Nam, we considered what could happen, but during these stateside adventures I had a very real seeing the threat. Such times are ideal for prompting prayer, believe me. I cannot imagine the horror felt by the 9/11 passengers. In any case, feeling helpless in a plane is not a good feeling.

I was forced to take the last seat on a plane, in the middle of a black family that was clearly angry at The Man.

They began asking me uncomfortable questions that I calmly answered to the best of my ability. Other white people on the plane were giving me looks of "sucks for you" and "you're on your own."

After long the family was impressed that I was actually open-minded on issues about race, told me to run for president, and that they would vote for me.

feeling helpless in a plane must be horrible!! i have been on a few flights that were scary. on one we had to land at sum small airport because of thunderstorms and as we were landing there was lightning all around us. on another we had heavy turbulance and the power in the cabin went out and the piolet said he had nothing to do with that and we could see the lightning outside of the plane. and another where i sat next to this guy who was really creep and it was right after 9/11 he would make like spastic moves it was weird and the lady on the other side of me was worried

Oh, good question!

I was flying to Boston at night in a twin engine turbo prop. About 14 passengers. I had the first seat. The pilot section was curtained off -- no solid door. The curtain was pulled off to the side so we could see into the pilot's cabin. Obviously, this was pre-9/11.

I was asleep when all of a sudden loud shrieking alarms went off. I bolted awake so fast I startled the pilots. Dark outside, so I couldn't see anything through the windows. Pilot finally came on and apologized. They had accidently dropped air speed and the alarms kicked on. They had a new pilot flying (experienced copilot) and until he corrected air speed, those alarms kept shrieking. Then the pilot left the cockpit (the experienced one) and walked over to me and apologized again for taking a few years off my life! I should have held out for a free ticket! LOL
