I grew up in a Catholic church that played traditional hymns on an organ. Four years ago, I moved to another Catholic church-with a whole different sound. We have a singing group that plays with guitars, drums, tambourines, and even maracas. I absolutely hate it and don't think it belongs in a Catholic church. Is there anyone who has had the same experience or shares my opinion?

Interestingly enough the Catholic church used almost no musical instruments for a good 1500+ years durings its mass. Everything thing was sung in the Gregorian chant style (except for the homily).

Personally I think they should return to the pleasant Greogrian chant, or keep it strictly classical. Pianos, Violins, Cellos, etc are fine, but when you start bringing in modern rock and clapping that does it for me. If I wanted to listen to Christian rock I would go to some charismatic chapel.

If you want a Catholic church with no instruments try out the Eastern Rites (Byzantine, Ukrainian rite, for example) they don't even have an organ. I just hope you like incense.

My mother and I noted the same thing in one local Catholic Church. I tend to agree with my mother's comment that "The singing group likes to hear themselves sing, so they play all the non-traditional hippie music nobody else in the congregation knows."

The priest wants to keep the musicians happy, otherwise there would be no music at all.

If you like traditional SPANISH hymns, you can always visit the other Catholic Church here in town that has a predominately illegal Mexican alien congregation.

i had a similar experience but i was and still am in a baptist church. i was at one church moved to another and some of the slowest church songs went into a fast-beat tempo. i didn't like it at all. have you talked to your parents about it. maybe you can tell them how you feel. i go to a different church now ( i moved again) and my sunday night church youth group plays songs with guitars and drums and a singer and i love it. maybe i don't feel the same because every church is different but i grew to stand it because alot of churchs now have music more can relate to. Hope it works out! ;)

Sorry, but welcome to the 21st century.
Open yourself up to this possibility:
Are the lyrics uplifting and toward God the Almighty?
Does the Holy Spirit agree with your spirit?
Some music, even by Christian standards, is not what I call "Jesus" or praise music. But I will make you a small, easy challenge.
Pick up a praise music CD by Phillips, Craig & Dean. These men are licensed pastors who love the Lord and you can sense this in their singing. It has a modern sound but with a traditional feel.
Leave open the possibility before quickly judging it. You may be surprised.

what are you talking about? Electric guitars and drum sets have been used for hundreds of years!
