I'm making an Astronaut Shape cake & I would like it to be a layer cake. If I freeze it, will it be easier to cut, or should I make 2 & stack them? Would it be better if it were a pound cake?
Could this be a disaster waiting to happen?

I think it would be okay to make one large layer into two thinner layers, using Wilton's cake leveler. Two full shape layers on top of one another may look awkward.

The pound cake would be okay, but I'm not sure how the taste of a pound cake would be with the sweetness of the decorating icing. I would stick with your basic cake recipe and cut it in half.

It's not a disaster waiting to happen - just be careful. I've torted cakes before...with no problem. Besides, if you bake two separate layers, you're still going to have to level both layers in order to make them stack well -- it would be easier to adjust the leveler and just cut one cake in half, rather than doing it twice.

Good luck!

I would use a thin wire to cut it into halves. Then slide a very thin plastic pastry cloth between the layers. Lift the top off very carefully. Frost the top of the bottom layer. Flip the top part onto a cookie sheet, bring the two halfs close together as if they were two parts of a hinge and quickly flip the top half onto the bottom half.

Karen's suggestion of using a thin wire is a good one. I've also seen it suggested that you can use strong thread to do it.
