For defensive purposes. This is nothing new. N.Korea has been stating their defensive intentions since the 90s. They just stepped up the pace after watching a few things we have done.

Think about it:
-Bush withdraws from the anti-ballistic missile treaty in 2001.
-Bush states N.Korea is on his axis of evil along with Iraq. 2002
-Bush then invades Iraq. 2002
-N.Korea withdraws from the NPT 2003 and restates to the world they are going to start developing nuclear weapons again. (They had started this in the 90s but then stopped)

Now, I don't know about you but if some guy was preaching that I was evil and then I watched him take over somebody's house for the same reason... well, I'd start stocking up on weapons too

They actually think that having one or two nuclear weapons will make the US and the west fear and respect them more.

Italy and Canada could make nukes within a year if they wanted to, but choose not to and are respected by the world.

Korean leadership is basically a demented little crackpot and his cronies who are not connected to reality.

If America did not back down to the USSR with its THOUSANDS of nuclear weapons, what makes this little backwater think that one or two will make a difference to the US?

Simple. They are insane. Just don't blame the North Koreans, they have no control over their government.
The sooner Kim & Compnay are out, the better for everybody.

There's no doubt that North Korea's leader Kim Jong Il (Don't know if I spelled it right) is psychotic and he should not have nuclear weapons. I think the rest of the world (including the US) needs to take major steps at disarmament themselves if they are going to insist that no ne else have nuclear weapons.

allow's see must be because we by no potential signed a suitable peace treaty with North Korea yet a give up hearth on the accurate of that blood bathtub that we call the Korean conflict diplomatically a give up hearth isn't as strong as a peace treaty, then we ought to consider each and each and every of the hardship they had to get those nukes, I propose letting die 1/2 the rustic by employing starvation in case you want to have the funds for the price of arising them i'm efficient that they are going to use them in the adventure that they imagine they might want to also in case you're short of money and also you're a totalitarian us of a the position no individual from the exterior fairly knows what is going on you could promote common procedures to cause them to or promote aspects cloth o total nukes to the right customer say Al- qaida, Iran Syria, Hamas, Hugo Chavez. also they have a pacesetter as loopy as ours so undesirable issues are coming faster or later there'll be a mushroom cloud over a important city in us of a and then usa of america will lost it and by employing the time we regain our selves the international must be an extremely distinct position, look at Pearl Harbor the japs bombed usa of america were given mad and four years later Italy Japan Germany and the different axis the position lengthy gone. and we do not turn on the soviets because it ought to have look undesirable after each and each and every of the propaganda if element were given out of hand the accurate will be Empire usa of america.

Because they're a bully nation with an inferiority complex. Kim Jong Il wants to push around the international community the way he pushes around his people.

While his people die in droves from disease and starvation, he sits in a mansion playing nuclear chicken with the rest of the world. Pathetic.

When I was in grade school, there was this big bully who picked on me all the time. Finally, I took matters into my own hands and started defending myself. He didn't pick on me anymore.

The Bush administration has shown itself to be the biggest bully on the planet, and the world' newest 'evil empire'. North Korea, India, Pakistan, Iran and a lot of other countries are beginning to think they need to take steps to defend themselves against the Bush dynasty. We illegally and unconstitutionally invaded Iraq - a sovereign nation that in no way threatened, provoked, or attacked the U.S. - for only TWO reasons: 1) George Bush had an emotional need to 'finish' what his daddy started in Desert Storm; and 2) George Bush's boorish boss, LimpDick Cheney, wants all the OIL that's swimming underneath Iraq's sands so that he and his buddies at Halliburton and Exxon-Mobil can get richer and richer and richer.

Prediction: There will be NO TROOP WITHDRAWALS from Iraq until Cheney has a rock-solid, iron-clad arrangement in place (with the new Iraqi 'puppet' government he helped install)
to take all of Iraq's OIL.

To protect themselves from the big bad bush. Is it only OK for America to have the most destructive weapons on the planet?

quite simply - concessions. They do not need a working weapon, just the idea that they are close will get them millions of dollars in free "aid" from other countries.

Why would any nation want them?

I'm not saying it's right or wrong to have them.
