I agree that you should decorate how you like...but as far what's in right now, I would say this whole vintage/modern look where you see pieces that look like they came from an antique store or your grandma's living room mixed with modern/fresh colors or shapes. You can get some good ideas from the magazines Domino and Blueprint. Or check out www.dominomag.com. Good luck!
PS- can I say that the animal/safari thing makes me cringe...personal preference though!

Whatever theme you choose, make sure it is not constrained to "time". The "in" thing will perhaps limit you and cause you to have to change it again when the "in" is "out".
Make it something that is a classic that never goes out of style. I have found that this works best because the items you decorate with are useful in other rooms later when you change again. Classic never dies.

Your question is very broad and hard to give a specific answer to.
Ask yourself:
Room look small, dark, need wall or floor repair? Get the room design in your mind.
TV shows on HGTV are fantastic to wet your taste in room design.
Visit Bookstores and libraries. Price sale items at Pier One and home improvement stores. This will allow you to get vision of what is currently stylish.
Learn color design from colorwheel books and paint stores. If the room color clashes with your theme it will hurt the ambiance.
Good luck!

a pretty and relaxing theme would be the beach.
you paint your walls a mermaid green and then you have stripes and there color is surfside.then you have a nice white couch(optional) if you dont you can go to a store and buy fabric to cover it. then you could have a side table with a pretty green plant sitting on it.
