We are forbidden to kill non-Muslims and the basic rule governing the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims is that of peaceful coexistence, justice and compassion. The following two verses are key verses that embody that general rule:

[As for such (non-Muslims) who do not fight you on account of (your) faith, or drive you forth from your homelands, God does not forbid you to show them kindness (also love and respect) and to deal with them with equity, for God loves those who act equitably. God only forbids you to turn in friendship towards such as fight against you because of (your) faith and drive you forth from your homelands or aid (others) in driving you forth. As for those from among you who turn towards them for alliance, it is they who are wrongdoers.] (Al-Mumtahanah 60:8-9)

This verse makes it a Muslim’s duty to treat peacefully coexisting persons with equity (qist) and birr. The term birr and its derivatives are the same expressions used in the Qur’an and Hadith to refer to one’s relationship with his or her parents. Such a relationship is more than kindness, since it includes also love and respect. Many English translations of the Qur’an have translated this Qur’anic term as kindness, a translation that falls short of the richer meaning of the original Arabic term. To ameliorate this problem, the bracketed statement (also love and respect) was added above. The term qist has been translated as “justice.” Justice, however, is closest to another Arabic word `adl. This word, however, refers to giving the other his or her rights, no less and no more. Other scholars argue that the Qur’anic term qist means “going beyond justice by giving more than what is due to others.”

The permission to fight are to stop aggression and severe oppression. The condition for ceasing hostilities is not acceptance of Islam, but halt to aggression and oppression.

[Permission (to fight) is given to those against whom war is being wrongfully waged, and verily, God has indeed the power to aid them. Those who have been driven from their homelands in defiance of right for no other reason than their saying, ‘Our Lord is Allah.’] (Al-Hajj 22:39-40)

The key verses in the Qur’an concerning the justification of resorting to combative jihad are the following:

[And fight in God’s cause against those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression, for, verily, Allah does not love the aggressors. And slay them wherever you may come upon them, and drive them away from wherever they drove you away, for oppression is even worse than killing. And fight not against them near the Sacred Mosque until they fight against you first, but if they fight against you, slay them: such is the recompense of the rejecters of truth. But if they desist (from aggression), behold, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. And fight against them until there is no more oppression and religion belongs to God (i.e. until people can worship Allah without fear of persecution), but if they desist, then all hostility shall cease, except against those who commit injustice.] (Al-Baqarah 2:190-194)

Historically, these aggressors happened to be non-Muslims. In fact, the Qur’an allows fighting against fellow Muslims if they are aggressors and other means of restoring peace and justice have failed (Al-Hujurat 49:8-9). The issue is allowing fighting in the presence of aggression, not difference of religion.

No single verse in the Qur’an, when placed in its proper textual and historical context, permits fighting others on the basis of their faith, ethnicity, or nationality.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us how to behave on the battlefield. As a “hated act,” war should not be resorted to if other peaceful and just means may stop aggression or oppression. Intentions must be pure and no selfish personal or nationalistic agenda should be the driving force. There must be a declaration of war by a legitimate authority after due consultation. No non-combatants should be hurt. All must refrain from looting and unnecessary destruction. Prisoners of war and the injured must be treated humanely.

i really feel sorry for some of u people- for example sean- who i think has an IQ of less than 1. how dare you make such stupid and ignorant statements about someone's religion? grow up and go out there 2 get some knowledge before you open your mouth 2 insult people's religions you little T W A T.
by the way, the 'muslim religion' - islam- teaches that all killing is wrong except of course for self-defence, which is common sense. Quoting the Quran out of context is by far the single biggest mistake that even students of the Scripture continue to fall into. This method of quoting can be used to justify any desire or any view no matter how un-Godlike it may appear.

For example, a favorite quote which is repeated by many groups is that the Quran promotes killing and violence as evidenced by the verse: "And kill them wherever you find them" (2:191).

However, once we use the method of full context, then a totally different picture appears regarding the same issue:

"And kill them wherever you find them, and expel them from where they expelled you, and know that persecution is worse than being killed. And do not fight them at the Restricted Temple unless they fight you in it; if they fight you then kill them, thus is the reward of the disbelievers." (Quran 2:191)

Here we have a case of warfare being engaged in, and the people who were driven out being allowed to fight and reclaim their land/territory?A far cry from the sporadic killing that is implied when quoting out of context.

sadly, mis-quoting mentally-confused idiots are the ones who go on to become terrorists etc.- bringing blame to a perfect, peaceful and pure religion.

Perhaps we shd be the one to ask you this question. How many muslims die daily in Iraq and rarely get mentioned? If an american soldier get killed, you mourn bad. I do not want to call it xtn killing muslims, but thats the reality because no muslim in the us army will take to killing fellow muslim.
Non muslim is a relative term. If i can recall, the king of abysinia ie Negus did not profess Islam openly and he died with the Prophet praying on him. Pope John Paul died as the head of the church but we referenced him because we cannot ascertain the state of his mind at death and he never toy with islamic matters.
If only you can take the pain to read our history and see what muslims did to non muslims in Jerusalem when we captured it and then compared that with what the crusaders did to the muslims when they recaptured the place.
You are ahistorian and you cannot be objective until you can learn. Ignorance trieve in your faith and you assimilate all what your leaders told you hook, line ans sinker. Go and learn and stop cutting issues at the centre. Our history is there for the world to judge us and not for a freshers like you. Spare the time!

I said it once and I'll say it again. What does the Christian reliogion say about killing muslims. Its not about which religion kills its about who kill indivitally. People who kill aren't muslims. They aren't. They know they aren't they just use Islam to cause war in the world.Muslims aren't people who just cover and then kill. They are cheery people. My friends would have never guessed I'm a Muslim because they think muslims are what people think today.Ofcourse when I told them they were nice about it.They were still my friends and they respected my beliefs.I didn't go on and on and on about my religion. I respected them. Thats all muslims ask for today.Respect.

They think it is a good thing, and they do it all the time.

And if anyone who is a Muslim wants to leave, s/he is condemned to death by the community automatically because of that.

does Muslim religion say any thing like this? who said so?

i had been reading so much of your answers regarding Muslim being attacker and terrorist with fine examples of usama been laden, Saddam Hussein, etc etc etc ,,,,,,,

Saddam Husein was made strong American Allie to go for war against Iran and promised finance for the Kurdish resettlement's. but they turned their backs on their own promises.

osama been laden was again made by Americans to go to war against Soviet union, they promised him allot for redevelopment of Afghanistan but they again turned their backs,

every Muslim country had asked for a peace ful solution to Palestine liberation but again it only lasted up to meetings.

before American went in war against Iraq what did UN said to him? they overpowered UN resolution and went to war against Iraq, who are real terrorist? did they find any weapons of mass destruction? what is going on,,,,,, you are so ignorant...... really its a height of ignorance.

so your deed is all yours and is nothing to do with Islam.
