What is the religious history behind this rule?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

The Lord Jesus chose men to form the college of the twelve apostles, and the apostles did the same when they chose collaborators to succeed them in their ministry.

The Church recognizes herself to be bound by this choice made by the Lord himself. For this reason the ordination of women is not possible.

With love in Christ.

Read through the prism of our 21st century society, Christ's interactions with women in the Gospels were nothing special.

But consider this: in the earthly time and place in which He lived, His interactions with women were anything but ordinary.

He treated women with an equality and a respect that was very much unheard-of (and even scandalous) in His earthly time and place.

And yet, He did not commission any women with a sacramental ministry for His Church. For this role, He chose only men.

Look at the roles of priests in all societies, cultures, and religions -- one of their roles has always been to perform sacrifices. To be the conduit through which life is taken, in other words, for a religious purpose.

We women, on the other hand, are meant to be the conduit through which life is GIVEN, not taken -- by virtue of our biological ability to conceive and bear children.

Your question is a very good one, but it really has a simple answer -- the male-only Catholic priesthood is the way God wants it.

Ever since Vatican II(2), in 1967, there has been a rule against women in the priesthood. Tradition up until then was an unwritten rule. The reasoning behind this can be traced back to the Bible where God told Adam that he would make him a helper. Adam was to be the one "in charge" of the relationship, and the tradition stuck! Hope this helps.

Roman Catholic doctrine through the Pope and the Vatican believes women must be subservient to men. The church is totally sexist.

Men controlled the power back then. And as with alot of other things in the Catholic Church, men still control things. The Church places women as subordinate to men.

The plain and simple of it is that's how it's always been so that why it will continue to be.

Because it is a Patriarchy. (And because it used to benefit the Church - and probably still does - : a priest's financial legacy would go to the Church, not to a spouse).

Women are always subserviant in religion. That was the basis for no women.
