Is it possible to believe what you must believe to be a good Muslim, to have military and economic power, and to not pose an unconscionable threat to the civil societies of others? Or must Islam undergo a "renaissance and reformation" of their own if a stable peace is ever to be achieved between Islam and the West?

Not according to the teachings of the Koran. There can be no civil societal equality as long as people follow, to the letter, the koran. It teaches that ALL must be SUBMITTED to Allah, if all are not submitted, they must be killed(jihad or my understanding of it...) there is no civil society if other faiths cannot be expressed besides Islam... Knock the US all you want, but EVERY faith is expressed here, even Islam. Muslims aren't subject to special taxes to be muslims here, and if a Christian decides to leave that faith and become a muslim, that person isn't arrested and sentenced to death... so I guess the answer to the second part of your question is yes, a reformation is in order...my prayers are with you on that one!

Like any religion, it is always the extremists who disrupt the so called "civil societies." It was European Christians who really started this ongoing confilct, when the Papacy and the Royalty decided to chanel military aggression into the Middle East durring the Crusades.

There is story from that period of a muslim who rolled out his mat to pray, facing towards Mecca. A Christian hauled him to his feet, and told him to pray facing east. The Christian invader only knew the dogma which had been drilled into him, not the reason for it, and thus was unaware of his error.

Puritan Christians in England let a coup d'etat against the King, and executed him. They then seized power under Cromwell, and it was the rebellion under his extremist leadership which resulted in the Puritan expulsion from England that spawned the "Pilgrims."

Muslims need no such "renaissance" to become a "civilized" society. In fact, there is an argument to be made that it is Westerners and Christians who are in need of such a "reformation" to become a stable Global influence.

Islam is a mobile idea. It can be likened to soccer. In soccer, there is a ball, two goals, and no hands. In islam, all you really need to know is "there is no God, but God, and Muhammed is his prophet." The first Islamic empire was one of the fastest growing empires and one of the largest of it's time. True, Islamic law is harsh but it is also just. The problem with the current mix of democracy and islam is that the islamic people did not ask to be saved. The USA is not Iraq's mother, and we had no right to go into their country and tell them what to do. But yes, the simple, basic idea of islam is compatible with a civil society, it is the technacalities that are f'ing it up.

Why are people ignorant? The terrorists, such as Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden, are only posing to be Muslims. Why do people always watch television and read the newspapers on articles and programs which host "experts" on Islam that aren't even Muslim? People, India and China will rule the world economically so just stop fighting, ok?

A 'renaissance and reformation' is definitely needed for Islam. Right now it's like they're going through the dark ages. Christianity couldn't win with the Crusades, and Islam won't win with those tactics either, especially in this day and age of modern warfare and weapons.

Islam is a Billion years ahead of civil society.

I'm working on a deep research through the Holy Qur'an.
It teaches us how to use our own bodies to travel or transfer from a country to another, we can call each other without using cell phones, we can watch what's happening in the globe without using TVs. and much much more.

But what's pissing me off, that Muslims refuse to understand the science mentioned in the Qur'an, they want to stay ignorant and follow westerns. believing that they have it all, While the fact says that this called "technology" was caused by the ignorance of human beings, We forgot Islam and didn't follow Qur'an. that's why we had to think of a different way to move and communicate using objects, while again, we can use our own bodies.

My website will be online as soon as I finish my research.
May Allah bless you all.

The way things currently stand Islam is going to need to undergo a reformation. There are too many clerics preaching hatred of the west for things to settle down right now.

Just take a look at the U.S., it is a civil society yet it is run by a president who is a religious zealot and who represents the religious majority in this country. So if religion is compatible with the U.S., it can certainly be compatible with Islam. The one thing that Islamic countries must overcome is the infighting with one another and be less inclined to fall into civil wars with one another.

Ofcourse it is. What happened to all the pbs kids show saying "believe in what you want to believe" or "be yourself" Half the people we know these days are muslims and we don't know it. They are to afraid to show themselves.Personally I don't blame them. With all this hatred its hard to cover while at work or even school. It is hard to pray at work or school. This is problem every where not just with Islam.
