It sounds to me like those who would say that are of the belief that said religion is beneath their own and they do not consider it real. I have never heard the phrase but I doubt I would pay them any mind if I did. Sounds to me like they are the insecure people rather than those who they are attempting to insult. If they were secure in their own religion, they would simply nod or smile and let it go or say something to the effect of 'to each his own'. Good question!!

Insecure people are like (and among) good people and bad people -- They're everywhere. It has nothing to do with religion. Some may stereotype the religious, and they're no less bigoted than those who stereotype the races. Often the problem with some among the religious community is that they feel so threatened by opposing viewpoints that they lash out at them, revealing their insecurity. But it's people, not religion (nor race, national origin, sexual preference, etc.) who are the problem.

Religion is MAN'S way of covering his sin by his own works, instead of following the Bible in Acts Chapter 2. The "insecurity" is a way that the world looks at Christianity because they feel like we're able to take care of all of our own problems with a little reasoning and common sense, therefore religion nor salvation are necessary. I agree with your views that there is nothing wrong with praying for someone. The Scripture teaches us to "pray WITHOUT CEASING!" Prayer is like "a sweet-smelling savor" to God's nostrils because He "inhabits the praises of His people." A lot of people simply don't have the understanding to comprehend why we view our salvation as hoghly as we do. Funny thing is that there's an old saying that goes, "Prayer is the last refuge of the scoundrel," meaning that when people are at their lowest times in life regardless of what they believe or not, they'll pray in their own insecurities to a God they can't fathom or don't believe in! Funny, isn't it? Glod Bless you and maintain that prayer life!

this is a common belief because;
people turn to outside help when the need arises for an emotional/physical/spiritual support system. needing support [in the eyes of some] equals insecurity. thus the belief that religion is for insecure people.
based on this logic however, it would also be true that friends/doctors/lawyers/etc are for insecure people.

Religion is for insecure people, just as it is for secure people. The Bible says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the Glory or God" I am so glad that my father and mother were so "insecure" that they brought me up in a Christian home, for knowing Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord, has not only changed my life, but Praise God it will change my death as well.

What does being modest and being good have to do with religion?
Any person who wants the world to be a better place doesn't need religion to figure out what needs to be done. I figured it out without religion, I know many others who have to.
The good qualities you mentioned aren't specific to being in religion, it's just good common sense.

I think religion is a good thing for people. They need a reason to believe that life is more then we see. In my opinion, the people you speak of are nothing like the religious people I have talked to.
Most are mean and judgmental. I think this is why so many have fallen away from religion.
example : wolfpup above read her answer ... so negative and judgmental!

Well, religion does not have the monopoly on good behavior, charitable works, or modesty. Or morals. I don't think it's necessarily insecurity, but just different from me.

People say that because they are acually talking about themselves. They are insecure because they can't find a belief so they blame it on religion and other people. they have a saying when you point a finger there is three pionting back at you.Go ahead try.Point a finger and look at your hand.Youll find that there are three of your own fingers are pionting back.

Many people I know feel that organized religion impedes one's ability to think for themselves on matters regarding personal choices, moral choices and lifestyle choices.
There are those that feel that the choices they make regarding these things is between them and their God or higher power. They may feel that religion plays the role of an unnecessary middle-man.
