We pray to God because He is our Father. Just like you have a Parent and communicate with him or her. We as Christians communicate with our Heavenly Father. HE Loves his children and just want to be apart of our lives just like ur parents would!

Praying is more for your benefit that it is for God's. You pray for the comfort of sitting down and actually telling God what's on your mind. if you are confident enough that God already knows what you are thinking about and what you need help with, then i suppose you don't have to pray. But when I pray I feel the same way I do when when I am in a room with someone else and we have been thinking the same thing and I finally just put it out on the table. You don't even have to formally pray or speak out loud. But if you just say in your head, "father, I'm worried about this, 'lil help?" I think it help me have more confidence.

How dof you understand binary numbers and how they are used to make a computer work? How do you use a computer? You mean to tell me that you use a computer even though you don't understand how it works?
How do you understand how prayer works when God is sovereign?
The Bible teaches that God is Sovereign over everything:

Ephesians 1:11 (NKJV) In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,
This tells us that God has an eternal purpose, and that He works all things according to His eternal purpose. Knowing this, we rationalize, "Why pray?"

Daniel 4:35 (NKJV) All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven And among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand Or say to Him, "What have You done?"
We can't change God's purposes and if our prayers could shape God's policy, then the Most High would be subordinate to the will of man, and that is a terrifying thought. We know that we are commanded to pray, but because we don't understand how prayer can work when God is sovereign, we disobey His command to pray.

Prayer Is an Act of Communication.
Most of our problems in life are communication problems. Communication with your wife/husband, your co-workers, or boss. Most of your problems in life come from poor communication. You can't understand a person in marriage unless you communicate with them. And you can't understand God, God's will for your life, unless you communicate with Him. We will never understand the Word of God if we aren't dependant upon God to teach it to us. We need to approach the Scriptures like David did:

Psalms 119:18 (NKJV) Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law.

So if you have not seen anything yet, it ibecause you have not pray.

An excellent question I have never received a decent answer for. I have heard some explanations, but they're just the usual blather.

My bigger question about prayer is this: Hasn't god made up his mind to help or not already? Will praying change gods mind? If so, he doesn't seem to omnipotent to me.

It's like talking to your earthly parents, only God wants us to pray not only for the things we want or need, but for each other. It's a conversation with your creator that is awesome. Prayer also is a way to humble yourself and realize that as a mere human, you can't do it "all". We need God and asking him, in the name of Jesus, to answer our prayers is telling him that we understand we cannot get through this life alone and we are thankful that he's there for us all of the time. Prayer is also to thank him for all he's done for us. We are to state our wants and needs to God, even though he knows them before we do, because it's like asking your earthly parents for something you want or need. It's a respect, a love, and a wonderful thank you to your creator

It's our form of acceptance and submission to the omniscient. It demonstrates our faith and provides comfort to our own self. It is more so for US then for the greater unknown. Prayer creates hope when we fear the unknown and have no possible solution on our own and we cannot predict the outcome. We leave our hopes and fears in word directed towards someone or something to what many refer to as GOD. The fact we may not hear the acceptance or the fact he/she has received it is irrelevant. We feel happy just knowing we expressed it, got it out of our head, and spoke our feelings out with the anticipation of a better outcome then to have done nothing but loathe and gloat on our own with no hope.

Basketball,
All true relationships revolve around communication. In fact, the bible says that your relationship with God, is the only passage into the Kingdom. Many will come to Him on that Day, proclaiming all the wonderful works they did in His name. His response? "I never knew you. Depart from Me, all you who practice lawlessness". There it is. Do you know Him? Does He know you? If we do not communicate, there can be no true relationship with anyone. He speaks to us, through His written word, the works of nature, and the acts of His children. There must be a response. Thus we pray. Not for things, but to respond to Him when He communicates with us. He already knows what we need, and provides it freely, according to our faith. We use prayer to give thanks, to pour blessings upon those in need, and to give Him the praise He so richly deserves. Prayer is a gift of exceeding richness. The ability and right, to speak with God, and thus enter into relationship with Him.

because the earth is a physical place controlled by spiritual forces. The only way to move something from the spiritual to the physical is by prayer.

God doesnt just fix something because he can see it. Its your earth, it was given to you, and you were given authority over it by Christ, so pray when you need something, and believe, and you have it.
