The phrase "Jesus Freaks" got its start in the early 1970's. The drug, sex, and hippie culture of that time was winding down, Woodstock was a memory (will for those who weren't to buzzed to be able to remember anything), and many of the youth of that time were no finding what they were seeking in that culture. So many turned to religion. They started a brand of Christianity that was free, emotional, and for many very real. They questioned a lot of church practices and authority, wanting a simpler, purer form of belief. They brought rock music into the churches, and started the contemporary Christian music still going today. They replaced the "suit and tie" for church with street clothes. They gave us things like "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Godspell", songs like "Day by Day". It was Life magazine, in a pictorial in the early 1970's that hung the title "Jesus Freaks" on them.

Many of those "Jesus Freaks" remain strong Christians to this day. Some still pastor growing churches and have made an impact on Christianity which has helped to change it for the better.

And lots of them are still around, enjoying the music, performing "Godspell", shaking up the church and the world with the message of Jesus. And loving God with all their hearts.

LOL yes, one can just 'tell'...usually by the way they scream at you about eternal damnation and can't see how your belief can *possibly* differ from theirs! Oh yeah, they are also the ones who call you 'ignorant' or some other derogatory remark, completely out of context...
The ones who simply follow a person called jesus and try their utmost to live a good and just life, trying to be as un-hypocritical and un-bigoted as is humanly possible, well I don't consider them 'freaks'. Shame there's not many of them around though.

:)
