Franklin was certainly a deist. However, it is likely that Jefferson was an atheist, as evidenced by the fact that he edited a version of the bible in which he removed all references to the supernatural. Really.

Benjamin Franklin was a Deist, as were many of the Founding Fathers including Thomas Jefferson. This is because of the influence of the Enlightenment on them, and that influence can be found in our government's structure and ideals, based on Enlightenment writer John Locke.

Back then, however, it was considered basically the same thing as atheism.

Deist. Might as well be Atheist. There is really no difference where the rubber meets the road.
An Atheist simply believes in one less God than a Deist.

Atheists were imprisoned or executed during the time the colonies were established. It is unlikely anyone would have publicly announced he was an atheist.
