Why are there so many paedophilia crimes commited by priests?

It's a shame that some men with that disorder become priests and use their position to harm children. However, it IS all around us, not just Catholic priests like some might suppose from media reports. Look in the schools! Why aren't reporters asking what should be done about the pedophilia scandal in education? Guess you get a better reaction/ratings if you knock the church. Since educators needn't be celibate, that doesn't seem to be the answer. The unfortunate truth is that people who prey on children look for positions with access to children.

actually there is a misconception that many paedophilia crimes are commited by priests BUT the difference with priests and regular people is that priests have an obligation to it's community to maintain a respectful standard and is in the public eye so when a crime like this happens in the church, it becomes widely publicized. many other people get caught but doesnt end up in the media usually because the accusers have no kind of public attention. just look at Dateline on NBC and see how many non-priests they catch on "To catch a predator".

I have several theories:

1) The priests have no regular sexual outlets (such as marriage or premarital sex), and, like pressure cookers, they either have to leak or explode.
2) It's a power thing, like nearly any case of sexual harrassment on the job. The boys are there, vulnerable, in a weaker position, and easy to cow.
3) The Church encourages boys more than girls to become altar services; therefore, the boys are closer to the priests and more likely to be with the priests in private than the girls are.
4) I suspect some men with gay tendencies try to escape it by becoming priests, but the passion overwhelms them. Since as priests they're not allowed to be openly sexual, they might either sleep with other priests, or, if they have predatory tendencies as well, turn to little boys. (I am not saying that all homosexuals are child molesters!)

Of course, not all priests who can't control themselves are going to prey upon little boys. Some might seduce, or be seduced by, female parishioners or church workers, or nuns.

good question but i don't think its just priests....statistics show the majority is white males between the ages of 20-70, strange isn't it? i don't like to generalize but i think we need to find out why its this particular group...perhaps its just hormones and if thats it why push all the porn and viagra? doesn't that just make it worse....the really disturbing part is more and more females are engaging in this horrible trend.....i say rusty axes and castration are the only real remedies.

If the Catholic church allowed priests to marry, I bet you that rate would go down considerably.
However, I doubt that will ever happen...

Children are easy targets to men that think they can control or oever power them, its just sick.

They flock to the Catholic Church because they know their crimes have been covered up in the past.
