bali is the place to go if you want to relax or have fun at the beach. though, i wasn't there for relaxing. i was there to look at the temples and study the rest of the balinese culture. i only had little free time to crash at the beach and play with the sand.
if you plan to go there, you should at least check out these places: pantai sanur, museum le mayeur, the blanco renaissance museum, museum rudana, pura uluwatu, mandala garuda wisnu kencana (gwk), art centre (werdhi budaya), puri anom, kawasan kintamani, kawasan toyabungkah, pura besakih, denpasar, hs silver, kertha gosa, pasar seni sukawati, pantai kuta, tanah lot, and pantai nusa dua.
okay, let me try to explain all those places in brief.
~ "pantai" means beach in indonesian (bahasa indonesia). so, you should go to pantai sanur, pantai kuta, and pantai nusa dua. kuta is where all of the tourists go. that's also where all of the surfers go and do their stuff. sanur is more for the locals. they bathe in the sea. it's quite beautiful in the early morning. nusa dua is an exclusive area. the sand... oh my, is so white. pantai nusa dua is my favorite place. not too crowded unlike kuta. not too many locals & tourists either. it's just a nice, relaxing beach.
~ museum le mayeur (belgium), the blanco renaissance museum (spanish), museum rudana (balinese), & art centre (werdhi budaya) are art museums. i don't know if you like paintings but those are some nice places to go. museum le mayeur is right next to pantai sanur.
~ pura uluwatu, pura besakih, and tanah lot are holy areas. in pura uluwatu, beware of the monkeys. they're not friendly things. pura besakih is the most holiest temples of them all. just imagine as if it's headquarters for all balinese hindus. and tanah lot... it's just so pretty there.
~ kawasan kintamani & kawasan toyabungkuh are old areas of bali. you can see how they actually live. or, you could check out denpasar where it's all modern. take your pick.
~ mandala garuda wisnu kencana (gwk) is a great rock formation that was carved. it's majestic. you should go there and see it for yourself. it's hard to explain how big it is. puri anom is a cultural place. you can go watch the tarian barong. "tarian" means dance. the barong is very important to the balinese. it is the battle between good & evil. kertha gosa is a historical place. it used to be a palace. where the king would be with his mistresses, if i'm not mistaken.
~ if you want to go shopping go to hs silver or pasar seni sukawati. hs silver sells all sorts of silver handicrafts. on the other hand, pasar seni sukawati sells anything cheaply. you can bargain too.
~ night clubs... they're everywhere. stay around kuta & denpasar for the nightlife. across the hotel i was staying (paradiso), there was a pub. pubs, clubs, & little dark areas are everywhere. just keep your eyes open to watch for it.

I went to Bali in 2001 and it was a disappointment. It is a really long flight. I expected it to be great but culturally there is very little to experience. Everywhere you go there are Australians drinking beer. If that's what you want for an extra 2 hours journey you could just go to Australia. On the plus side local people are extremely friendly and the food is delicious.
Personally I wouldn't go again.

I used to live in Indonesia. been to Bali a few times for vacation and love it there. Wish I could go back. You'll like it.

Yup! Bali's definitely the place! It's does get some getting use to, but I think you'll have a great time there.

me mate lives in singapore and he went to bali with his lass for a week and reckons its pretty expensive for that area of the world
i wood give vietnam or thailand a try
everything is dirty cheap and the people treat u like a god
