I've used an on-line phone book to find everyone within or near a certain town with a certain syrname. I put "This will be an odd letter if the genealogy bug hasn't bitten you" in the first sentence, then the fact I wasn't asking for money or selling anything in the second. I enclosed an SASE for their convenience. 75% of them wrote back; most saying they didn't know, but I found two cousins.

I have done this, with good results. It's nice to get personal and family stories to add to family trees since those stories can add "color" to the bare bones data.

We have several very unique surnames in our family tree. While traveling around the US, I've looked for others with those names. I've been able to find distant relatives that way, and have added their lines to my family tree database.
