I work for a university and I have faculty members yelling and cursing at me. One just came in and yelled at me, for a reason that isn't my control. My boss has done the same, and it's clearly not right. I've been here a year today and I just can't take it anymore. What can I do about this? They aren't allowed to do this correct? I'm an administrative assistant making 31,000/yr.... I shouldn't be treated this way! Shouldn't they get in trouble for this?

Actually I do my job, and I'm on lunch break now which is why I'm on yahoo answers. Plus when I first got this job I was told during down time I can browse the internet and do such. I do my job so good... I barely have work to do. I complain I need more to do, and they barely give me any. This guy was yelling because he made a mistake and someone else made a mistake. I'm the one who processed the mistake he gave me. I didn't know it's a mistake, because he's the one who knows what he's doing on that issue... I just submit it for everone. I do my job exactly how I'm supposed to... I've been here a year and so I'm familiar and know everything and how to do it correctly now!

First off, right a letter. That may make them seem you're frightened to confront the problem, but in truth, it can stop from people yelling at your face. Right a letter about your views to the problems and send them to the top. I warn you, though, be ready with an idea of what can happen if things change- meaning, if your boss walks to you with the letter clutched in his hand, screaming "Well, what do you want me to do about it?!", have an answer to that question. Perhaps you can ask the boss to have everyone simply tell you whats wrong. If they can't come up with a valid answer to that, then you know they're just venting anger at you. If they are, go back to the boss with that.

The first thing that you should do is make sure that there is no reason for them to yell at you for performance. The next step, as an administrator, is to promote communication and feedback. This is a large part of the job. Managing people is not an easy task. If you can investigate the problems that these people are really having, then it might help as well. I know that we dont want to devote more time to jobs than we have to, but in this case it might be necessary.
It is a good job and everything can be better through communication. Ask them how they are doing and offer more assistance. Also, if you are having a problem with an individual, talk to them in a calm, collective manner. Communication is the only key to sucess at this job. Trust me, without communicating what needs to be said, when these things take place, is very important. Don't wait until things get tooooo bad. Take each instance as it comes. Communicate on the problem immediately.
A trick my mom used was to tell them "I cannot hear you when you are using that tone of voice". It will let them examine the way they are treating you.
Honestly, if these people are the ones that are teaching students, and they dont know this, then I feel there are bigger problems at play.

Unfortunately, unless their tirades against you are sexist or racist, there is little you can do. Nobody, whether they make $31,000 or $3,100, should be subjected to such abuse.
If you have already addressed the issue with your bosses, you should go to a higher authority (the bosses of your bosses) to document your complaint. However, be prepared to find deaf ears. It is possible that the bosses of your bosses value your bosses more than they value you and won't do anything - except maybe find a way to fire you as a complainer. On the other hand, if your bosses really value human capital in the organization, they will work to create a pleasant, nurturing work environment.
Oh, and be sure you are doing your work instead of playing on Yahoo Answers.
Good luck!

Could it possibly be because you are on Yahoo Answers when you should be working?
People don't yell and curse for no good reason. I realize they should handle it differently, but what is your part in this?

Absolutly. They are making an uncomfortable working environment for you. You need to find a higher up to talk to about this.
