I will just say this. Pregnant women should not just stop smoking. My wife and I were told by our doctor that just stopping could cause a miscarriage because of the stress on the mother. According to our doctor, your friend should gradually cut back until she is only smoking 2-3 a day then stop. My wife went from a pack and a half a day to none over a period of a month. It can be done, but only by someone who really wants to quit. If they don't the never will. I have quit also. I just stopped smoking, and it is all just a matter of will power and desire.

I was a smoker, but after I found out I was pregnant I quit. I just told myself that the pack of cigs I had was it and when I finished that pack I never bought anymore and quit. Being around other people smoking made me feel kind of sick, so I think that is what also helped me to not start up again.

my mom quit with my brother and i....she quit for most of her pregnancy with my sister.
the interesting part is that my brother and i are more alike physically and mentally than my sister.
i mean, all 3 of us are normal, bright, strong adults, however, i always wondered if the difference was the smoking. there's so many other variables that i'd never know for sure.
most women i know of that smoked just plain quit when pregnant. they knew they shouldn't so the just stopped.
sometimes if you want to bad enough you will just stop. i quit smoking after 10 years. not b/c of pregnancy, but i just made a CHOICE!
it has been hard for me not to drink while pregnant! oh, i can't wait for that first beer or glass of wine....it will taste sooo good:)
she just has to decide which is more important to her.
personally, i think she's being a bit selfish and ignorant.
take care and i hope her baby is healthy.

She should know that there's a higher risk of miscarriage, low birth weight, heart problems, lack of oxygen getting to the baby, plus all the chemical crap that goes into the blood including carcinogens. She needs to grow up and take some responsibility for herself and her baby.
